Does anyone know whether you can do work experience while claiming the jobseeker's benefit? Any of the jobs I'm applying for that are out of my direct line of previous experience aren't being offered on the basis of lack of experience, so I'm thinking of getting some experience (unpaid, of course).

Have a look at the FAS Work Placement Programme. Or make enquiries at your local SW office or Partnership offices about the new TUS scheme.

Not sure about benefit but I know defiantly with job seekers allowance you can apply for a work placement project through Fas.

Sign up with fas (which you should be already) and look up jobs and work placement projects. They are offered for a maximum of 9 months and many places offer them. Find one that suits and try going for it.

There are 2 types one for graduates and one for anyone. Have a look and see what you can find. They are wonderful opportunities and in exchange you can keep your dole:)

Thanks everyone. I should've probably stated that the work experience I've (tentatively) organised was done so by myself with a company and not through FAS. Would this change things?

I went into Fás last week to register as I'd like to apply for work experience through the WPP. The lady I spoke to was really helpful (she had a read through my CV) and suggested if I'm really stuck that I could always approach former employers and suggest they sign up for WPP themselves if they haven't already and get more experience there. You could try that with the place you've set up if they aren't already in the programme

Great, thanks for that! I'll check out this 'WPP' thing and see if they can accommodate. I appreciate it!
