Just witnessed a crash outside the office. A car rear ended, damage to one car, no-one hurt, Lots of discussion going on while they wait for the Gardai.

We were discussing it here, my understanding is you exchange insurance details, take pictures and notes and on you go, no need for the cops. Is this correct, or are the cops required just in case the guilty party denies everything after the fact?

    Depends on the situation

I rear ended a guy once (careful now!), nothing serious, just a tap. And he made me sign something to admit I hit him and I made him sign something to say there was no damage and he was happy enough to leave the scene. Never heard anything since.

No need for the gardai or for insurance details, it was very pleasant actually
