At what point do you retrain/return to college?

I have been working part-time/reduced hours for over a year now and applying for positions in my industry in Ireland and the UK. However, I’ve had little success. At what point does have people changed their plan/decided to return to education.
I’ve reapplied as a mature student for September in a number of completely different areas, one of which seems appealing but at the moment the short term picture isn’t great.
Anyhow, my preference at the minute is to get a job in my area, but when your qualifications/skills set/experience doesn’t matter it just don’t matter as far as the jobs market is concerned.
At the same time I am in my 30’s and my decision to return to education would have implications for significant other etc.
Also, there’s a possibility that three/four years down the line I won’t be able to get a job in my ‘new’ career area.
Anyhow, it’s a very difficult decision to make, and just wondering if any other posters have been in my boots.
Continue as I’m doing, put the head down with part-time work and hope something comes up full-time in my area or cut my losses, retrain and make a change.
All I want to do is work full-time, but it’s an employers market and from what I can see the days of full-time employment going in many areas are done.
Interested to get some perspective from others who went/are going through this situation?
