Unconventional wedding

    Hi guys,

Myself and my fiance have been deciding on a plan of action for our wedding which we hope to take place during the summer next year. After long deliberations we have decided to have it in Ireland as we were thinking of going abroad but due to other circumstances we have decided to stay put. However, we do not want to go down the normal route of having a sit down meal for a large amount of people and would like to make it more of an informal celebration, something like, for example a 50's or ratpack themed night where food platters were served in the evening instead of a big three course meal (Not that I have anything against this, its just not really our thing!). As a lot of our family are living abroad we thought it would be nicer to have a more intimate meal directly after the registry office for close friends and family and then have a big party as described above in the evening time where everyone was invited (we were thinking really funky invites and tables dressed in 50's club style etc.) We were wondering if anyone out there has done something similar to this type of wedding (Not necessarily themed) and whether they know any good venues in the Dublin, Wicklow or Kildare areas that would cater for a celebration of this kind (somewhere a little different preferably). I know people may think that this is a little bit of unorthodox way of doing things but we just want to do it our way and make it a really fun time for the 70-80 people that we have there that they hopefully remember in years to come...
Many thanks for any help on this!!!
    All suggestions are welcome:):)!!!

    lisnavagh house
    pillar room rotunda hospital
    fallon and byrne
    harbourmaster
    anglers rest

I would think any of the above would be suitable

I got married abroad (an elopement) and then a few weeks later held a themed party with no meal, just finger food platters, DJ, bar.

We did it somewhere totally different, it was expensive to hire the place but well worth it. It cost us around as much as a 'normal' wedding when you added up both the cost of the elopement and the cost of the party.

Id rather not post the name of the venue on the thread as it could identify me but if you want more info please pm me and Ill give you more detail.

sweetie - I was recently at a wedding in Fallon and Byrne, I thought it was the most awful venue ever, not in any way unusual except that you had to walk through a foodmarket in your dressy gear to get to it!! Plus many people were complaining that you had to take so many stairs or wait ages for a lift to go for a cigarette - and then stand out on the public street being bothered by gypsies and junkies to have it. The function room is no different than any function room, and you have to share the loos with people from the restaurant - I definitely would never recommend it, it screamed 'cheap wedding' (although its probably very expensive to hire!).

I recently had to ask a smoking bride to move out of my way so I could get a Dublin Bike from the stand outside F&B and I did think it was pretty strange - I'm sure she could have run into people she knew going home after work!!

If it was a bit more self-contained it would be a lovely place.

    Hi HeeBeeGeeBee!
I was just about to post almost the same query you did almost a year ago!
I'd love to know what you ended up doing? I am looking at the pillar room, and the likes, but without a "planner" the blank canvas seems very daunting!

Have a look at Bewleys opposite the 4 seasons in d4. They have a very nicely sized room on the side for smaller weddings. Actually a nice hotel as well.

Sits 60 inside for sit down meal but we'll be having a marquee also on site as we cant cut it down to 60 we're having about 100-120 people. Getting married there too and doing a BBQ reception.
