Ubuntu and Firefox

Wasnt sure where to post this so I'm stickin it here.

    I'm using Ubuntu 10.10.
    I have firefox (namoroka) 4
I also have nightly build 6.0a1

Now the nightly build looks completely different to FF4. It was upgraded from minefield. FF4 doesnt have the same customisability as nightly.
I dont think it ever actually upgraded, just looks like the FF3, do I need to remove it completely and re-install or should it have done all that in the upgrade ?
Also as I use nightly most and no addons are compatible with it I have disabled the compatibility check to force them to work. Is this safe to do ?

The compatibility check just looks to see if they have been tested with the current version. If you disable it and it still works and its stable then there isn't a problem. Obviously if you install a new addon and your browser starts crashing then you should disable the addon till it's fixed.

It's extremely unlikely that disabling compatibility will put you at any sort of risk beyond that.

As for your other question, as far as I remember there wasn't a huge visual change in firefox on linux between 3 and 4 (at least in comparison to windows). So if it says you are running version 4 then that's what your running, you don't need to worry about version 3 interfering.

Thanks for that. As long as the forced compatibility is safe enough to do I'll just keep using Nightly. All add-ons work fine and its stable so I wont be using FF4 until that changes. Thanks again icon7.gif

Actually seeing as I'm here could I ask about password security ? I used to use the firefox password remember thing then decided to try LastPass. LastPass is such a pain to use, and the "autofill" thing that pops up 200 times a day drives me insane. Is Firefox built in password vault secure or should I use something like LastPass. At the moment I'm using LastPass as a backup but using Firefox password to autofill on webpages because its just better in that respect.

AFAIK it is secure if you set a master password, which you will have to enter every time firefox starts. Otherwise I'd imagine it is just a plain text file on your computer (generally in this case it is a deliberate decision not to encrypt because it wouldn't be secure and they don't want to give the false impression it is).

To be honest unless you're entering a password every time lastpass starts I wouldn't consider it to be any more secure. I've never used it so this is just conjecture on my half.

Key authentication is always better than password authentication. Gotta get myself one of those one time password yokes and hook it up to PAM.

I dont have a master password on the firefox passwords, I didnt even know it was possible and just assumed they were encrypted.LastPass does require a master password which isnt remembered. Thing is it stores all passwords online which is handy if you loose it off your system but how secure their system is I dont know. Have to assume its more secure than mine anyway seeing as I havent a clue what I'm at.
