Quick question, are all the models of these pretty much the same? I'm looking to buy a second hand one on adverts.ie and was just wondering if any DS I buy will be compatible with all the new Pokemon games etc.?

    Thanks

There are some features exclusive to later DS systems (DSi/XL) but all the new Pokemon games will work on any DS system. The original DS and the DSLite have GBA compatibility but no SD card slot (minus flashcards) and DSi/DSi XL are the opposite.

I think it's more to do with whether you want a heavier or lighter system. For me personally, the original DS now looks bulky and hard to handle, whereas the DS Lite or DSI are a little smoother and easier to transport. I think that is most important for truly on the move and portable gaming.

I also think a big problem with the original DS was that many felt the top was too "top heavy" and in some cases it was snapping or breaking easily

Take a look at the pictures for comparison (an original DS next to a light model)

Go for the DS lite. It's cheaper than the DSi and DSi XL. All they have are bells and whistles but the DS lite plays GBA games and will be a lot cheaper.

Black and white have video chat for online battles on a DSi, and the DSi can use WPA wireless.
If you don't care about those, nothing will be lost from playing all current pokemon ds games on a DS Lite.
