Problems syncing and unsyncing iphone 4 with itunes.

    Hi,

I'm fine with technology and computer, and even most apple devices. But I can't (read: am too impatient to deal with apple to) get my head around this one.

Basically, I wanted to delete some videos off my phone. The videos were in my movie player app. I plugged the phone into itunes and deleted the ones i didn't want, using itunes. It then said the videos were gone (certainly they disappeared from the list in itunes), but the memory on the hard drive was still showing as being used.

So i thought ok, maybe I will hit this sync button and it will communicate to the phone to delete this videos and free up the space. So yes, I believe this is what happened. The space is now free.

But when I then attempt to unselcet the "sync apps" box, itunes perceives this as "please delete all my apps and their content from my phone".

Naturally I cancelled this operation, as this is not what I want. I simply want to uncouple my phone from itunes, as it was before I synced the two. I cannot understand why I need to delete all my apps to do this.

So does anybody have the solution to this? I simply wish to "not sync" my phone's apps with itunes, as it was before I started this procedure. But I still want the apps to remain on my phone, as before.

    Thanks for your help.

In Summary, tick "manually manage music and video"?

That's actually the only box that is ticked. But I thank you for your suggestion.

There's another option to tick to prevent "automatic syncing of iOS devices" (or words to that effect).

I can't seem to find this option anywhere.. But I'm not sure the problem would be solved by this..

Nothing is set to sync between itunes and the phone, I manage all my own stuff because itunes always ****s it up. I don't know why I felt I had to sync the apps, I didn't need to do this before to get the videos onto the phone, don't know why I thought this would take them back off it..

But all I want is to be able to unsync the apps, as before, and not have to delete them all to do it..

I confess am a tad confused. But if I understand correctly, you don't have to deselect the apps. Just eject the phone in the sidebar, deleting nothing.

    Apologies if I've misconstrued.

sorry, i tend to lack the ability to get my point across. it's a chronic issue, I'm working on it...

all I want to do is untick the "sync apps" box without deleting all my apps.

currently, when I untick the "sync apps" box, i get a message saying "do you wish to unsync your apps? All apps and any data associated with them will be deleted".

Well, why don't you eject then disconnect the phone first, then untick?

hang on, you would no longer see that option, silly me.

Why does it matter to you whether this is ticked or not? Effectively, you are telling iPhone that you don't want the apps on, just like you removed the videos.......

In itunes/preferences/devices you may select "prevent iphones (etc) from syncing automatically.

Yeah, that's a problem! I'd love to try unticking the "sync apps" box after i eject the phone, but the clever ***** at apple decided this should not be allowed!

The only option I can think of is just to say ok, delete them all. then unsync it.. then redownload all my apps from the app store?

surely there's a better way? I wonder if i did this would i be charged for everything a second time?

No, you won't ever be charged again. But, sorry for being thick, why exactly do you want to go through this? What is the problem with the apps sync being ticked?

Videos are stored in the iPod library on the phone, unless you're using a custom video app like the late, lamented VLC. So deleting videos from the "Movies" list of your iPhone when connected will delete them from the device. Sometimes, it takes the status indicator a few minutes to catch up.

The Sync Apps thing is a separate issue. That denotes whether you want to keep copies of your apps on both the phone and computer. It has nothing to do with videos at all.

    I hope that makes sense!

you make a fair point. I just don't want my apps synced with itunes.. I forget why. But I didn't have them synced before and it worked fine for me, now itunes is butting itself into my business by not letting me sync/unsync them so I'd rather keep the unsynced from now on, leave me in control of my apps and not itunes.

Yeah mate the videos were stored in my movie player app, i don't have any movies in itunes/iphone library.

The sync apps is the part I'm having trouble with, because i DON'T want to sync my apps. I did sync them for the purpose of updating the movies in my movie app, but now I can't unsync them (without deleting them all).
