Why does the Patriot act keep getting renewed?

They just passed another extension to it that O'Bama will surely sign due to his less than spectacular record when it comes to protecting civil liberties.

Osama is dead and 9/11 was nearly 10 years ago, why are they still clining onto this invasion of privacy? and is there any chance it will ever be got rid of?

It's not going to go away for a long time, if ever. Osama may be dead but the "war against terror" still goes on, and as long as there is terrorism against the USA, and the US deploying its military abroad in combat missions, I cannot see the Patriot Act going away. Americans love their civil liberties, but they like their freedom more, and the Patrriot Act is seen by many as protecting that freedom. Thus, no President who wants to be (re)elected will get rid.

It seems to me that every time the act is renewed, most of the provisions are renewed, and a few are dropped. Over time, if this pattern continues, the act will effectively be withdrawn. That said, not all the provisions of the act are problematic, only the ones which are getting the airtime as being particularly controversial.

Still theres nothing to prevent a re-institution of dropped provisions later on is there?

There's nothing to prevent the government doing a lot of things. What of it?

Nothing of it. Just wondering if its the case that the Patriot Act will always be in diminishing returns or if they will be able to re-strengthen it later. I suppose so though.

They want to to keep extending it to take away more freedoms from American citizens while telling them they are more safe! Personally, I would feel more safe if the Government wasn't taken away my freedoms!

unfortunately that needs to be balanced with safety and security. Take for example the freedom of assembly, which is threatened by the fear of suicide bombings.
