What is the maximum length a HDMI cable can be without suffering a loss of picture and sound quality. What would be the loss be on a 12 meter cable.

It depends on the cable, Digibox and TV but 15m is a reasonable top limit before you can expect problems.

and to point out, you won't suffer a loss of quality, you will get no picture. it's not like an analog cable where the picture will start to degrade. you will go from perfect picture, to a lot of sparklies on the screen(maybe) to a blank screen, no in between state of poorer quality video

as well as the cable it depends on the equipment. some hDMI devices inside tv's have built in equalizers to compensate for long cables, so jsut because a 15m cable worked for someone else does not mean it will work in your setup. that said, the better the cable the better chance it will work

short cables, don't spend you money, most will work exactly the same, for long runs, worth spending a bit more to maximize your chances of success

It's essentially the same stuff as Cat5e (you can even use 2 x screened Cat5e cables). The actual official HDMI distance rating for internal cable identical to Cat5e quality is 16m

Thanks for all your helpful replies to this thread. Where is the best place in Dublin to get good quality 12M HDMI cable at the right price.

I shopped around for a 1.4 HDMI cable of 7 metres and could not find anywhere with a decent price, in the end I bought it from the UK.

That is a v1.3 not a v 1.4...should be well able for 1080 but maybe not 2160 if we ever see that. :)

These guys are in Dublin. Have bought cable from them and been very satisfied - just make sure they don't charge a bulk price for shipping (they mostly ship to trade so the default charge is high).

I'd get something like this and run dual cat 6 cables in between.

the op never mentioned the requirement for return channel.:D

or you could convert a hdmi signal and send it down via cat5 for much longer distances if needed

what do you mean if? already here. Latest Onkyo higher end AVR's feature scaling to 4k*2K resolution.

Not over the air Mossy, only in specialised High end AV and Digital Cinema/Video Wall setups.

the new onkyo avr's will take in any source and scale it to 4K*2k, the source can be over hdmi, like a ps3, a sky box, an xbox, freesat box or an analog source like a wii, no matter the input resolution the avr can scale to 4k*2k, meaning the HDMI cable from the AVR to TV has to be able to handle 300MHz(297 to be exact) TMDS clock rates to carry it. it's nothing to do with over the air, this is a standardly available AVR, sold by richersounds, meaning it is far from specialized. (no offense to Richersounds)

    available for sub £1000

the 709, at less than 800, also has it

you can hardly call either of those specialized equipment, they are standard AVR's.

lot more to v1.4 than just ARC. HEC, higher data rates, better defined 3d support, but in any road, at a guess a 12m cable is for another room, so ARC probably not required, it'd be strange to listen to audio from tv in a different room. the other possibility would be a projector, but again ARC not required

yea i know, just making the point that the op prob wasnt running a 3D projector and 9.2 surround in the other room.:D

true. i have a 10m cable in my cinema room though, going behind wall up behind screen and back through the ceiling joists to the projector mount point and when 4k*2k projectors are released, although it isn't a v1.4 cable, i'd say there is a chance it could handle 4k*2k, given where i bought it, if not will be a room refurb coming on.

if i was putting in a cable now, for a projector especially, i'd make sure it was v1.4 tested, for 4k*2k support alone. 100+" screens will be the real beneficiaries of 4k*2k

For what its worth, I bought two 15m HDMI cables from here for my cinema room and was well impressed with the quality of the cables and the service!
