Help with moving to Sky

OK so I've finally convinced my family to switch to Sky from UPC, but an issue has come up which may actually stop us moving over.

We paid yesterday and a technician is coming out in a month to install the dish and all that. We got an email today from Sky saying thanks for switching yada yada and a few key things about the switch too, one being:

"2. Cabling. We'll need to run a cable from your new Sky Box to your telephone socket, so think about where you'd like this to go and we'll do our best to help."

Does this mean that we're going to have to run wires from my telephone box in my hall into my living room to switch to sky? Or can sky not use the same line UPC did? Also if anyone else had this problem I'd really appreciate any help as this is an issue which may prevent us switching!!

    Thanks

if you are only getting one sky box you will not need a phone line.

Doesn't matter-Sky+ boxes are installed as standard now,you don't need it connected to a phoneline.

sky+hd boxes are now installed as standard so you will have twin cable coming in if your getting single room install. Had to pay €37.50 extra activation fee for having no phone line but getting €100 cash back so quite :)

You must have phone line if choosing multi room.

hm ok thanks...whats a twin cable though? did you pay 37.50 for a wireless phone line or something? And how did you swindle this 100 euro cash back haha??

Sorry about the questions thanks tho!

why would you bother going to Sky - there are plenty of channels available on free to air via a satellite and no monthly bills.

yes you miss out on some of the premium channels but a lot of the stuff on sky is generally repeated, with the exception of the live channels like sky sports etc etc

Because it's the op's choice to switch from one pay tv platform to another one,FTA serves a purpose but if you're used to having the likes of Living,Discovery etc. then FTA is a no no.
Take Friday nights as an example, nothing decent to watch on FTA,the Late Late:eek: or repeats on the ITV channels.

Everytime somebody posts questions about Sky we seem to get at least one FTA fanboy posting irrelevant stuff and clogging up the thread or sending it off topic.Rant over.

With regards to the OP's install, the installer will not have cables trailing everywhere and will use the tidiest, most direct route to where the box is going, plus no need to have phoneline connected unless they want multiroom.

I'm a definite advocate of Freesat but you're right, it's the OP's choice.

As for Friday nights I'd have to differ zerks.

Friday nights, I'll often watch a combination of Magners League Rugby, Have I Got News for You, Newsnight, Jools Holland, Vincent Browne, Family Guy, BBC4 and Film 4.

Personally, ditching Skys poor fare, execrable customer service and Ruperts quest to enslave me has proved most satisfying. :D

A twin cable is just two individual wires running along side each other but joined together by the other covering as if it were one cable you were running. (just like electrical cable) its easier than running two seperate cables.

Sky wont install multi room without you having a phone line. But they will install a single room installation without a phone line, but charge €37.50 activation fee because you don't have a phone line.

The documents they send you will say must have a phone line, but just ignore that for single room installation.

The €100 cash back was a great deal sky had back in April, sorry you missed it:D
