Just a heads up. Apparently they'll be discussing it on the last word today. Will they do a better job than RTE.

I suppose it might improve awareness but hardly worth the effort.

I cant beleive that this guy said go to Lidl and buy a FTA kit if you want overseas channels. Not a mention of Proper Freesat systems.

I cant believe that he said you will only get Egyptian television with a Lidl system. No mention of BBC, ITV, C4 etc.

I've always said about these programmes,if they are that bad on this subject, how can we trust them to be anyway accurate in their analysis of anything else like economics or politics?

So if 20% of the population rely on analogue reception. It looks like at least 19% are going to be wondering where's Ryan Tubridy gone come 2013.

"Tech Experts" on radio stations are generally useless.

The tech guy on The Right Hook is terrible, and you can always count on someone from siliconrepublic to talk nonsense.

Adrian Weckler and the beginning didn't sound one bit rehearsed , shame they didn't rehearse the rest - RTÉjr a 24hr childrens channel  and Egyptian TV on your dish .

When it comes to DTT and FTA sat TV he doesn't have a clue. RTÉ radio had him on early last year, he didn't have a clue then and he doesn't have a clue now. Don't think RTÉ had him back since.

I listened back to that piece on today FM and was appalled, no mention of radio stations, no mention about picture quality, ability to pause tv, record etc but the bit about the lidl sat system made my blood boil so I emailed MC and got an almost instant reply. The points I raised were not addressed but the following sentence made my eyes water.

" We have never had complaints about him before and I have full confidence in his factual comment and in his opinions. "

    Was he stating facts???

How do I raise an official complaint about programme content? ie it was deliberately misleading.

That was a poor interview. After listening to it I would not be in a rush to get the service. They should have had someone who was interested in the project and its potential.

I'd have to agree, I don't normally write in to radio stations but that was such a poor piece that I felt the need to. Adrian Weckler really just ran down Saorview as a pointless waste of money (maybe he was briefed by TV3).

The way he described it was that this was going to be an enormous outlay for anybody just to get Saorview - New TV's all round, and Set Top Boxes for every TV in the house and all that on top of the Licence fee. Sounds like such a rip off

... Until you look at if you have Sky or UPC and you need to pay a monthly subuscription, and a box for every TV if you want multi room (for an extra fee) - and all that on top of the Licence fee.

Don't even get me started about the "getting a Lidl Sattelite to pick up 100 free TV stations from Egypt" comment. FreeSat anyone?

A very poorly researched or delivered piece, in my opinion.

While I haven't listened to the radio segment, he has a point.

Having to get a new set top box at €80 per box for each TV in the house, just to get 4 extra channels, three of which are just rehashs of existing content is pretty poor value for money.

Yes I know it gives you better picture quality etc.

It looks particularly bad value for money when you compare it to what you get on Freeview in the UK.

It's not supposed to be a superior service to what we already have.

We are in the EU unfortunately, so we must switch to digital.

Value for money has nothing to do with it.

    OUTRAGEOUS

In all honesty i cant believe what im hearing - but to be honest i have long suspected that the powers that be prefer not promote the benefits of FREESAT/FTA28.2 and the multitude of free channels available - I am obviously going to be accused of being paranoid, but i genuinely believe that this is to assist UPC and SKY - I mean the guy said the only options for more channels is SKY or UPC - For ****s sake - And that response he sent to GBCULLEN was disgraceful -

To be honest i share many peoples frustrations and it truely makes my blood boil - last week i had a Sky sales man at my door TELLING ME, that the only option for HD stations was with SKy or UPC and by proxy Sky is cheaper so i should go with them - Ive heard sales guys in various shops spouting the same *****

Obviously its the policy not to highlight the free channels line-up and to make it appear the only options are UPC or SKY -

As for mr "We have never had complaints about him before and I have full confidence in his factual comment and in his opinions" PLEASE GIVE ME HIS EMAIL ADDRESS or at least point me too it :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:- I will compose a straight to the point email and post copy on this thread as i did with MR COLM HAYES- I assure you it would be my pleasure

That isn't quiet true, the whole point of moving over the digital is too make more efficient use of the bandwidth available, including delivering more channels (along with more space for mobile BB, etc.)

If there was no advantage at all to it, people would rightfully complain very loudly about having to spend money on new gear for no benefit.

The value proposition in the UK is very clear, they went from just 4 - 5 channels to 35 very high quality channels.

The value proposition in Ireland is far weaker.

It has been made much weaker by the refusal of Pat Carey, the temporary minister before the current one, to allow RTE to have adverts on RTE News Now channel, meaning no funding for News gathering or production. And to make it worse, he refused the RTE Plus channel wich would allow RTE to broadcast an extra channel (well half a channel) with further choice. RTE 1+1 adds nothing but cost.

No imagination and bowing to vested (private) interests. (Wasn't he part of the government that busted the country?)

Pat Carey didn't decide anything, he was there for such a short time he probably didn't even know where his office in the Dept was (and the other Depts he was responsible for). His name was attached to the press release as the Minister in charge at that time.

This was all decided in the 2-3 months leading up to the announcement.

BK, listen to the segment then comment. I had a reply ready for you but got called away and lost it. Here is the reason we are all so angry.

You are missing a very valid point and it is of vital importance = its SKY.

I returned to Ireland a few years ago and I was absolutely appalled with the quality of Irish Analogue TV reception both in private homes and .. worst of all in hotels. I could not for the life of me figure out why people would pay a TV licence for such a service. Shortly afterwards I heard that RTE were joining sky but imagine my amazement when Sky stipulated that to avail of the better picture quality I had to pay Sky in addition to the licemce fee a minimum amount per month to enable me to receive RTE etc in the picture quality everyone else all over Europe took for granted with a one off licence fee. To get DTT on other TV's they can be linked by coax and using an RF modulator watch DTT.

Here is the illustration, at present if I want RTE etc I pay sky 23 euro per month = 276 euro per annum, plus a TV licence of 160 euro. I am not bothered about BBC etc or sky plus. I just want to watch my Irish channels. It was a travesty and should never have been allowed.

From today, for an outlay of 160 euro I can get RT1, RTE2 HD, TV3, 3e, RTE Rolling News 24 hours, a Kiddies channel and from tomorrow an RTE1+1. Plus 10 radio channels. Better sound, widescreen, pause/rewind, record. And that is only the first MUX. The ASO is still 18 months away so no one knows how many more Free channels will appear. And by then cost will have reduced still further. In addition the same combo box will get me BBC etc for free. Bye Bye sky.

Now I can ditch sky and save 276 euro per annum plus get everything I need. Its a no brainer.

It gives us back our independence. I know of quite a few people who cant wait to ditch Sky and today one of them rang sky, they were paying 33 euro per month, immediately they were offered a reduction to 21pm and then 11.99pm!! Go figure.

Sky were greedy and got away with it for so long, now its payback time.

The segment on Today FM was an utter disgrace.

I gave MC a chance to clarify his email but as yet no reply. He was in effect calling me a liar. I have raised an official complaint but only got a holding reply from... a Mr Tom Hardy, saying he is away until 7th June!! This may explain why MC said we have never received complaints about mr wreckler!! I have contacted the BAI as well but I am not holding my breath.

Bu maybe they felt they could not mention Freesat again as we technically aren't meant to get it here in Ireland. We are only getting it due to the luck of us being in the satellite's footprint.

Talking about Freesat would be unfair to Saorview maybe? Who knows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,678 ✭✭✭swoofer

Niman, did you listen to the whole segment?? Putting in the bit about Egyptian channels was deliberate to scare people off. The ad in Aldi has the sat system and Saorview on the same page!! So the idea is get the sat system and the Saorview a one off payment and pay no more BUT the dish size is only 45cm!! It will work but tricky to set up, 60cm is far better.

Loads around where I am are ditching sky already.

To be honest GB I did not hear the piece, was working. Tried to listen to it on PodCast since but issues with hearing it.

I too am about to cancel my $ky. Paying too much for too long and Freesat system, with my Saorview, will suffice. Hardly watch any more TV any more.

You think perhaps the piece on MC was influenced by $ky?

An update, got a reply back today from Today FM via BAI and basically they are not going to issue a clarification or an apology to myself. They conveniently did not answer the bit about the Lidl dish and Egyptian TV but shrugged it off as a " Throw away comment"

How do I get that segment back to listen to again as to be honest I am surprised I got a reply? And I think their reply has a few mistakes in it eg Weckler siad Chamions league would be in HD!! Cant recall that.

From my own experience, perhaps 70-80% of people in times past complaining of poor reception - it was down to bad installation by DIYers or electricians and people in the TV trade who did not fully know what they were doing.
The latter is a much bigger problem here than it would be in the UK.
Poor reception could usually be greatly improved by someone who knew what they were doing.
Installations could also gradually deteriorate due to weather damage, and people do nothing about it

You could have got either Digital MMDS or cable as an alternative in most of the country.
