I was shopping in Aldi yesterday evening and what did I come across but this cereal box sporting Tux on the front :) It isn't even a penguin that just happens to look like Tux, it actually is him :P Anyone else come across this? Just though I would post a picture if anyone wants to be super dedicated to Linux and start to include this cereal in their diets :P

That's gas! The image is in the public domain, so I imagine Aldi were just trying to cut a corner to save royalties. Still, I feel like buying that cereal now! :D

I posted this on ubuntuforums too and someone sent me the link to another thread about tux on a cereal box. At first i thought it was the same and i had just posted up something that was already posted before but it turns out it was a different box :P He's doing the rounds :) Here's the link to that post -

Public Domain material still requires attribution if I can remember correctly. Common knowledge(which has no clear universal definition) is the only material you can yank from the net and throw it on a box.

I am still going to buy it thogh...

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain#Defining_the_public_domain it doesn't require attribution. Public Domain is the absence of any licensing or copyright at all.

There are several variants of Tux.

The original image by Larry Ewing is copyright but permission is granted to use and/or modify the image, attribution required "if someone asks".

The G2 variant (from which the foreground penguin appears to be derived) by Jan Vansteenkiste is public domain but (as highlighted here) is based on a CrystalXP tutorial and CrystalXP claims "The creation that comes from a tutorial can only be used only in a personal context or within the framework of the private life. Any use that's not personal will have to be discussed with the author and with the Team of CrystalXP. No use in commercial purposes is authorized (whether it's in a direct or indirect way) excepted opposite indication of the author."

I bet open source Frosted Flakes taste much better than the closed source Frosties™. :-D

That's very cool :) If you have some LEGO lying around you could make your own LEGO Tux :P
