I am trying to be more organized and put in place some structures which will allow me access to the wealth of information that is now out there on the internet. Apart from bookmarking a site I like and manually visiting when I have time, or signing up to some form of email alert I am not doing much else, which is probably considered a sin these days. :o

Anyway before I get into what are the best sites for certain topics, etc. I first want to establish what applications or tools are out there that I should be using to get organized. Having to go and look for information is a “no, no” e.g. go to a website and browse, ideally I want all information presented to me, and probably the ability to categorize, etc. I know set-up will be required by me upfront to achieve this and that is fine, unless I am really clueless and something wonderful exists already.

Some of the possibilities I am aware of are:
    • RSS feeds (websites, forums, etc)
    • Possibly following “key” twitter accounts
    • Perhaps email subscriptions (where RSS is not an option or?)
    • Others?? (what am I missing?)
I would also be interested in opinions in terms of what priority I should look to organize data e.g. website/rss first, email second, twitter third, etc..

Ideally I want this to be available on laptop/PC and to be synched/available on mobile, so solutions ideally need to have good mobile app support also.

    Appreciate any feedback you have.

    Thanks
    Eddie

Thanks, had started looking at that. Was assuming there was more out there or that I might have been missing a trick, perhaps not. :)

Curating tools are very handy as well for collecting information on certain topics - try storify and have a look for that term on Mashable for some excellent advice on that topic!

changedetection.com do free web page monitoring - they send you an email alert when a web page changes. Handy.

I use Twitter a lot currently. TweetDeck can help you display information: remember you can make lists of users in Twitter, but with TweetDeck you can show these lists in columns.

I'll go for RSS and Twitter in the first place.
