Sky reception

    I moved into my house last September and the previous owners left their Sky dish on the chimney. They had told me that they always had problems with the reception due to trees in the line of sight of the dish. These trees are not on my land so I can't do anything about that. Anyway I could move the dish to the other chimney and I'm fairly confident that I could get a decent reception then. Is there any better type of dish out there and LNB that would help with the signal strength?

    Make sure it's the trees that are the problem first. For a dish on a chimney (even a bungalow) the trees would need to be fairly close and very big to cause a problem, but it's possible, and I would check this in the first instance.

    Go to dishpointer.com, find your house and position the green pointer on it, select 28.2 Astra for the satellite, and check the box to show the "line of sight checker" (red), and position it where the trees are. The "h=..." will tell you how high an obstacle needs to be to become a problem (assuming your house and the tree are roughly at the same altitude). Note that the value will be if the dish is at ground level. If your dish is 10 feet, or 20 feet up on your house, add this to the h value.
