Overpayment - in theory what should happen?

I've come to the end of a contract, and well in advance of it ending both my supervisor and I informed the people in charge of payroll that the account should be closed after a certain date and I shouldn't be paid any more. However, I was paid again this month. I'm giving the money back as I knew it wasn't due to me and don't want to cause hassle for my supervisor/department, but I'm very curious whether in theory I would be entitled to keep the money as it was a mistake by payroll and they had been clearly informed in advance not to pay me.
I've no intention of keeping it, but just asking out of curiousity!

    No, you wouldn't.

It's very well established that money paid in error does not belong to the person who received it, even if they warned the other party that such an error may occur. Advance warnings and disclaimers aren't really worth anything. You could paint a warning sign on a parking space saying, "Any car parked here automatically becomes the property of house no. 45", but in reality it would be unenforcable.

Thanks, good to know! Though now I can't feel all smug about my honesty ;)
