Video recorder picture resolution and output file type

Right now I hate my iPhone... and wished I'd gone for a HTC or something. I've just finished p*ssing around converting a whole load of exceptionally large HD .MOV videos to lower resolution .MP4 types for a website. It seems that it is not possible at all to change the resolution or output file type of the standard video recorder (i.e. camera) app. This seems a bit stupid to be blunt about it or else I'm missing something obvious!! If not, can someone recommend an alternative video recorder app where I have control over the output video format and possibly even the resolution etc. It's for an iPhone 4 and I had a quick look at iTunes but everything there seems to be for the older phone versions only (did not try to download them though).

And don't get me started on the video trim feature that comes as standard - works grand if selecting different scenes but try using it for concert videos where the scene does not change significantly and there's no readout of the actual play time which is your only reference to when songs start and end etc. Aghhh.... Apple, I thought things were meant to be simple to use?!

I suppose I deserve a lack of response for insulting the iPhone on this forum! :o But seriously, does noone know of a video recorder app for the iPhone 4 which can output mp4 files and also allows the user to choose the recording resolution? It would seem to me to be a common-sense requirement.

I'd have thought that it would make more sense to do the conversion / formatting on the computer - just like you would do your photo processing on a computer, not the camera itself.

When you're talking about a HD .mov file devouring over a MB of storage per second, it's a given (to me anyway!) that the end file size is generally going to be unnecessarily large and wasteful if you're recording 10 minutes of amateur video (1GB!). All digital cameras I've come across actually let you adjust the picture resolution and I would imagine that any offering better than 320 x 240 video resolution let you adjust this too. As for file types, any good digital camera also gives you control over this (e.g. .raw versus .jpg files). And I know the iPhone is meant to fundamentally be a phone, but...

I really don't mean to be argumentative here but I just can't understand why users of the video recorder on the iPhone 4 are being forced into post-processing in order to change the file format or resolution (simply to reduce the output file size). Plus, I thought one of the ideas behind the iPhone was that it would act as an alternative to a computer for most things rather than force you to need to used a computer (which incidentally you appear to need if trying to email video clips over a minute long).
