Not sure if this is the correct forum for the above so feel free to re-direct, in any case I'm looking for some information if available on the design of the now obsolete Mill Pond and Race, a friend of mine (farmer) has a mill pond on his land which has silted up and is over grown and he wishes to dredge/empty it, repair the dam and possible send water back down the mill race channel which is just about in existance.......can anyone direct me to a web-site, book or otherwise on this subject.

    how big?
Might have to go back through records to get more info on it, old OS Maps should have some info. If he's got folio maps, check them. there might be archaeological issues with the race itself, many of them are properly old and moochin around with them could land you in dramas.

And there might be issues with problems downstream of the pond when clearing the silt. It might be wise to consult with your local Fisheries Board in advance.
Better to have their consent/advice in advance, rather than being prosecuted after, for potential damage to aquatic life/habitat. The silt at the bottom of old ponds can be very damaging to fish life, if allowed to flow into watercourses unchecked.

Hopefully, all will be well. What a great project to be involved with!
