I can't seem to find a definitive answer. I've a media PC running 9.04 at the moment and have audio going through a separate sound system. Anyone know if 11.04 supports audio over hdmi? I need to reduce all the cables in the living room so my other option is W7 with XBMC but I'd rather stay Linux.

It does, in theory, but (at least last time I checked) only with a very limited selection of graphics cards and drivers.

I'm using audio over hdmi on a nvidia ion system under ubuntu 10.04 and it works pretty well. What hardware are you using?

I'll have to look up the spec. It's an onboard ati card. Can't remember the exact model. It needs a rebuild anyway. At least I know theres a chance it will work so i'll give it a go and see how I get on

I'd have a quick look at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#HDMI_Audio. It's for the opensource driver but if you are using that then there shouldn't be any difference in the test between arch and ubuntu.

Also http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature give a listing of what is supported by the open driver.

Sorry I have no more advice, I'm not all that familiar with ATI.

Ok 11.04 installed but no audio :(
    ~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC889A Analog [ALC889A Analog]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC889A Digital [ALC889A Digital]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

So it sees it and that implies that it's supported.
    aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

Looks like it's playing but nothing on the TV.

    Can select it as default.

    But still no sound.

The mb is a GA-MA69GM-S2H with an onboard Radeon X1250. I really don't want to use external speakers anymore. I'll keep plugging away and let you know if I succeed but if anyone has any ideas I'll be forever grateful.
