    How would one go about having a name added to the Irish Memorial records?

    (I hope this is not off topic)

    Regards,

    Jon

    there was a book of names added to the Soldiers Died In The Great War a few years ago , it contained the names of those "shot at dawn" who got pardoned by the British government .

    but i have no idea how you would go about it.

    Hi Jagdtiger,I can only imagine that it will be difficult to add a name to the Irish memorial records.If I were you I would contact both the "In From The Cold Project" and the "Commonwealth War Graves Commission" and report the casualties name and any info you may have concerning him or her to start with,from there hopefully his name will be accepted as a non commemorated casualty and will then be put forward for commemoration with the CWGC.Also it may be worth your while contacting the people who run the Irish Memorial Gardens at Islandbridge where the volumes of books containing the names are kept.There's also a digital archive accessible to the public there I believe so it may benefit to have a chat with them.Links below

    Hi Arnhem,

    Cheers for the links. I'll give the Memorial Gardens a try as its the books

    there that I would like his name to be added to, the CWGC are already doing

    a great job looking after his grave.

    It's more or less an impossible task in my opinion. Ireland's Memorial Record was originally published in 1923 and as far as I am aware has not being updated since it was 1st published.

    IMR commemorates mainly those who served in Irish regiments. There where 1000's of Irish men who joined English regiments, this is true of the opposite, many English men joined Irish Regiments. Many of those (Irish in English regiments) who died are not commemorated in Ireland's Memorial Record, hence a lot of researchers dislike it for not recording accurate numbers of Irish men who died in World War one.

    If the soldier you are looking to add is already on the CWGC's site then there isn't really much you can do.

    Tom Burnell (aka Enfield - see the WW1 forum) is involved in publishing books such as the Wexford War Dead, the Waterford War Dead etc. These books are more modern listings of Ireland's war dead and likely to prove more accurate than Ireland's Memorial Records. Might be worth a PM to Tom?

    Thanks Johnny I'll give that a try

    If you PM me the name i will see if he is in any other databases. I have found that Ireland's memorials Records to list less than 80% of the Irish Casualties and a lot of that 80% are not even from this country.
    Tom.

    Jon, I am not sure if my reply to the PM was sent or not, it looked a bit slow sending. Anyway.

    Post a query here;
    http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showforum=24

    He is listed here;
    http://baseportal.com/cgi-bin/baseportal.pl?htx=/research/WW1&localparams=1&db=WW1&cmd=list&range=0,50&Surname~=carroll&Forename~=john&cmd=all&Id=478

    He is listed in the census here;
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Lucan/Lucan_Town/5200/
    There is only one John Carroll in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour but not your man.
    He is not in Bond of Sacrifice, Irelands Memorial records, Soldier's Died in the Great War, Our Heroes, Irish at the Front or Irish on The Somme.
    Cheers.
    Tom.
