    My mother has a 99 VW Polo with less than 30K miles on the clock, she has it in with main dealer ant turn out gearbox (parts inside) is gone! has anybody come accross this and is there any come back for her given she bought it from new, has had it serviced by VW over the years and is now 11 years old? quote from VW for new gearbox €3K or re-condition it for €1.5K, is there a cover up by VW? any help would be great.

    not a chance in hell you will get anything form vw on that...why not bring the car to a reputable garage that is not a main dealer and get a second hand gearbox fitted for a couple of hundred....thats of course if it is the gearbox thats broke

    Those gearboxes leak oil but should have been spotted on service intervals. You will get a scrap one for 2-300 euro.

    30k on a 99 polo....:eek::eek:

    As above, IMO the only way a box on a polo would go with only 30k is if it ran low or empty of oil.
    It wouldn't be reasonable to expect anything from VW on a 12 year old car regardless of the mileage.

    When you say its been serviced by the dealer? How often? and has the timing belt etc been done? If not then the dealer hasn't been following VW's own scheduals so its doubtfull they ever checked/changed the gear oil.

    tks Nissan Doctor, car was serviced each year and this time it was going in for a job to timing belt (not sure what job - will have to ask her) it then that they came back with the gear box problem. I has always been serviced by the same VW garage - but even the quotes seem off the wall or maybe not?

    i'd try a few independent garages first, ma\ybe, now just maybe they could be trying to tempt her to scrap the 99 and get a new 2011.

    Padma, that could be right, the garage owner is even a friend of my parents but i never trusted him! will get other quotes but was not sure was this a old VW re-call type of problem? also must get her to check het fully comp insurance?? tks again

    The above could well be true.

    A good second hand box would be very easy get for a polo and would be cheap, €200-400 sort of range, to buy.

    With that mileage, the car is certainly worth keeping but it doesn't make financial sence to pay even the 1.5k when the car isn't even worth that.

    Her insurance would have nothing to do with mechanical failure/repair.

    what exactly was the probelm with the gearbox? popping out of gear? crunching?? no drive??

    OP, it's crazy bringing a 12 year old car to a main dealer, also no car manufacturer will offer a goodwill gesture on a 12 year old car. Also VW gearboxes of that era are very soft.

    Do a bit of googling, there are lots of places that will supply a reconditioned gearbox for alot less than main dealer prices.
