ACER Aspire 3693

My ACER Aspire 3693 laptop running Vista Home Basic takes an age to boot up and it is a bit slow thereafter. Increasing the RAM to 2 GBG has helped a somewhat and the 80GB HD no longer runs nearly continuously.
Would swapping the HD for a solid state one significantly reduce the boot up times or should I replace Vista with Win 7 or XP? Can I safely remove any of the ACER installed progs?
    Any comments?

P.S. I would use an external HD if I needed larger storage.

Just reinstall vista. Get all the updates and just install the programs you need. You do not need any of acers programs. This will speed things up.

An SSD seems like a waste of time and money for such a machine

This laptop came with Vista H B pre-installed, which was modified by Acer (According to both Microsoft and Acer when I was trying to resolve an issue after buying it). I do not have a Vista disk, just a restore facility in a hidden partition.
Is it possible to extract a usable and original copy of Vista? I don't see why I should have to shell out for a new copy.
I never use the ACER "extras" so they can go no problem.

Just reinstal from the hidden partition (Alt + F10 for Acer , usually) and then uninstal anything you dont want . Dont forget to back up anything you want saved to an external medium - files , bookmarks , product keys for purchased programs etc .

Might also be worthwhile running msconfig to stop .. well pretty much everything .. from loading on boot - the only thing you really need to load with Windows is your antivirus/firewall . This might resolve your problem even before reinstalling the OS . Oh yeah , an occasional defrag can also help somewhat .
