Chaffing !

    As I have put on a few extra lbs the tops of my legs get very sweaty and sore, what's the best way to ease it ? I've tried putting talc on but that doesn't last very long. I work in a job where I sweat a fair bit so was looking for something that lasts, doesn't smell or stain clothes.

    I've herd of using petrolium jelly but that stains apparently. Saw Lanacane anti-chaffing gel in Boots today but it was nearly a tenner ! any other ideas ?

    Are you overweight? I find if I put on a few pounds this causes this. If you are try to shift the extra pounds and you should definitely see a difference.

    I've used the Lanacane powder for similar problem and it cleared it up really quickly. Don't think it's as expensive as the gel.

    wear cycling shorts under your trousers? Long johns? Tights?

    Put mitchem deodrant on the inside of your legs?

    I dont have a clue just trying to help. I would have said talc but you have tried that. Go for the boots stuff you mentioned. In fairness a tenner isn't alot if you think of the money you have to pay to cure your chaffing!!

    That used to happen to me a lot in school. I had to wear a skirt and the bare skin from each leg rubbing against each other would cause a rash or something quite regularly (painful). Nowadays I mostly wear jeans/trousers and haven't had a problem since. So maybe change from skirts to trousers if that's the issue?

    I was talking to a friend about this recently and she said a lot of girls in her school had the same problem and they wore cycling shorts to stop it (wish I knew back then :P)

    Also if you can get anything with aloe vera in it, it works wonders for accelerating the healing process (just rub some cream or whatever you can find in at night. It might might make things worse if you apply it during the day by making your skin damp and adding to the friction).

    When I was overweight, I used Vaseline. Shifting the weight would really help though, I don't chafe at all now!

    I heard about vaseline but it's greasy & marks clothes. Went & got lanacane powder was €7.33 for small bottle but chemist told me would last longer than baby powder as it's medicated.

    Finally I can offer some sound advice. Johnsons baby nappy rash cream.... unreal. Its not as sticky and goey as sudocream and it works wonders. Its a white cream but take it from someone that has tried and tested it - it doesnt leave white marks on clothes or anything. Also, pile a load of it on at bed time. I put on a few pounds before and has the same problem and someone told me to get nappy rash cream. Its only about €2.50 for a tube and it lasts months and months... let me know how you get on...... :)


    edit: oh - i've just seen you have already purchased something. Let me know how that works too. I have since lost the weight and the problem disappeared too...

    I put some on tonight after a soak in a bath, and will do it again in the morning. I'll let you know how it goes ! Oh forgot to mention skirtsRevil I'm MALE so don't wear skirts - well only on weekends !

    Had this problem on holiday recently. It was sooo painful but Aloe vera gel solved it really quickly.

    Hey use caldesene powder at night to heal the rashes. its excellent. Use tea tree for any spots that develop. Caldesene comes in travel size too so handy for the backpack

    Also you can buy johnsons baby oil gel if ur running out of caldesene. You can get caldesene in the chemist. It's nappy rash powder, which is caused by chaffing.. which is what you're suffering from. And yes in the long term, weight loss will def make it better but for the short term you need something so I would def recommend the above...

    And maybe stay out of the skirts on the weekend - will only make worse!!

    I had a problem with chaffing when I started hillwalking, 5-10 hour walks. Saw some compression shorts I think they are in Dunnes or Penneys one day, absolutely solved the problem. Anti perspirant on the bits that perspire is another useful tactic. Prevention is better than cure.

    As other said, losing some weight will cut down the chaffing

    You might end up with sweat rash. Red marks but it's not painful or itchy but a bit unsightly.
    Sudocream seems to do the job here, it'll stain your clothes so use it when you're at home resting

    I've seen anti-chafing gel in bicycle shops which supply triathletes (can imagine chafing is a factor there).
