Renault key card "Card not recognised"

When inserted the message comes up "Card not recognised", any ideas? Card still locks and unlocks the car no problem.

It was working fine until now and spare works perfectly. Would a new battery make any difference?

If a new key is required can it be done outside a stealers?

    2006 Megane.

    Cheers

    :)

Some lad on a Rover forum linked to them years ago iirc, or maybe it was the ToyotaOwnersClub, either way Renault had told him he needed a new card thing.

I had the same problem before, cost we over €200 to fix, I was speaking a locksmith in Kenmare and he said that the non-original replacements are as good as the original at a fraction of the price

Don't think that works anymore, new or blank cards have to be programmed by Renault. I believe nearly all cards can be fixed though without the need for a new one.

hi, i have a grand scenic 06. drove home today from work and locked car, went out twenty mins later and placed key card in slot, notice came up on dashboard, card not detected. I have lost my space key. Is there any way to get this card to work without having to buy a new card. I have spend alot of money on this car in the past month. I intend to trade in this car in January but will not be buying a renault car ever again. I live in Galway. Thanks Ann

    They do indeed.

They'll repair the original card in a couple of working days (or less if you're in a panic) for about €100-€125. They'll also sell you a new card but that still means bringing the car to them to programme. They don't do road-side work.

In my case the problem was a broken solder joint on the circuit board inside the card. This is commonly caused by bending over time, e.g. owners sticking them in their ar5e pockets then sitting down and is an easy fix.

For the technically inclined, the card is powered by an induction coil which is energised by the reader. The broken joint meant the voltage generated by coil couldn't power the card electronics and the card couldn't send back it's security code to the ECUs. The micro-switch in the reader was telling the car a card was inserted but it wasn't getting a response from the card hence "Card not recognised".

I managed to avoid getting stranded a few times by pinching the card quite hard just beside the boot lock button. This seemed to reconnect the joints long enough for me to get the car started.

PS: the card contains loads of data on your car including the mileage.

left my key in at 9 today. just got a text saying its fixed €80
tragic thing is that I had a broken key that I had replaced recently and only binned the old one a week ago not knowing they could be fixed.
