Will I be insured?

Hi I will be 25 in about 6 months and I am wondering will this make me automatically insured on other peoples policies? I am still only a named driver under my fathers policy but he says I will be insured on all cars when I am 25. Question is my sister has her own insurance and she reckons I can drive her car when I turn 25 is this right? I know it depends on policy etc but in general if it mentions something about being 25 does that mean I would be insured? I have full drivers licence but don't have my own policy.

    RING THE INSURANCE COMPANY!

Jaysis, you'll have an answer in about 5 minutes, that's 100% conclusive. Us keyboard warriors wont be able to help you if the responses you get on here are incorrect and you get caught for driving without insurance.

    No

Some people's car policies include any full license holder over 25. You would be insured on these vehicles. Otherwise, not unless a named driver on someone's policy or if you have your own policy.

Policy on the other person's car would need to be "Open Driven" which generally anytime I priced it adds about 100-200euro extra onto a policy so most policies might not include it as standard.

The general rules are no help as this very much depends on the actual policy in force.

You must assume you are not covered. Ring sisters insurance company and explain exactly the situation. Then and only then will you know the situation.

Generally, If you have a policy in your own name, are over 25 with a full licence, you receive the extension to drive other cars Third Party Only.

I know that with axa i have an option, at extra cost to specify open driving for licenced drivers 25 or over on my car, but i havn't activated/requested it.
My policy does state however that i have 3rd party cover on another persons car provided i have their consent and the car is not owned by me or hired to me. There are conditions to that though regarding their insurance etc

Yeah you will, 100%. No need for you to check out anything with the insurance company now.

+1. Unless you have it in writing that you are covered then you must assume that you're not.

'Generally' being the operative word, it depends on what your insurance cert. says under the heading of 'Vehicles Covered'.

OP, there is no simple yes or no answer to your question because it depends on the policy held by the person whose car you propose to drive. If the other person's policy covers anybody between 25 and 70 with a full licence and driving with the consent of the owner then you would be covered for third party.

I said this in an earlier thread, there is no point in phoning the insurance company for a legal interpretation of the policy, the person you speak to is a call agent who's job is to give quotations and deal with renewals, they are not there to give out definitive answers on coverage, if you want that you need to download the policy from the company website.

If the person that you talk to gives you an answer to your question then they are in breach of company rules because the policy document is the rulebook and nobody is authorised to give a legal interpretation of it over the phone, least of all a call agent.

If you're a named driver on your fathers policy it's highly unlikely the "Driving other Cars" extension covers you. Mostly it's for the policy holder only. But the only sure way to know is to call.

Of course you should phone the insurance company, they are only ones who know for sure. If the customer service agent can't answer the question it should be escalated to someone who can answer it. The policy documents are legally worded, what you or I read is different to what the law reads and it's the legal wording that counts.

    Go away. Just go away.

Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case use a smilie. This one  would be appropriate.
