They have to be one of the ugliest cars around; they're almost Rhodius bad imho.

Also good to know that not everyone is a sheep and that BMW cannot get away with selling any old rubbish purely because it has a 'BMW' badge on the bonnet.

it was something different at least. It didn't work, but to say BMW selling any old rubbish is a bit OTT imo. Hardly like it was held together with gaffer tape. Nobody put a gun to the buyers head to buy it. Well the few that did:D

I'm no fan of the car but I do like to see car makers trying to create new niches and offering more choice.

I cannot understand why a company that supposedly makes 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' saw fit to sell such a monstrosity. Everything about that car goes against what a BMW should be about.

If BMW wants to sell an upscale niche market 5 series, then why are they not selling something that competes with the Merc CLS? There is something seriously ironic about the fact that Merc and Audi's upscale versions of the E-class and A6 respectively are sportier four door Coupes (the new CLS is supposedly a great car to drive and most un-Merc like in that regard), while BMW's equivalent is a big, heavy, most definitely unsporting, bloated, ugly monstrosity.

If only BMW could be forecd to have a rethink on the X6, X5M and X6M too! Oh and I should add, when are the car company that is supposed to make cars that are drivers' delights going to make a Z4M?

I'm all for more choice, but I also like to see car makers stick to what they know best, and make things that someway resemble the DNA of the brand in question. The only reason the 5 series GT is a BMW is because of the badge - there is nothing about that car that in any way stands for what BMW is about.

Of course, BMW has sold out on so much in recent times, it is hardly surprising that they thought they could get away with producing such vomit inducing rubbish. The only thing that is surprising is that they though people would buy the thing:D!

As much as I don't like the look of the car, I draw the line at lauding the misfortune of a company for trying to conduct a business. At least now they can learn from the mistake and progress.

Didnt they drop that mantra and now are on about "Driving Pleasure" or some similar nonsense?

I thought the GT was designed as a 5 series "saloon" for people wanting hatchback loading ability. Its not meant to be an upscale, sporting, niche model at all?

I sat in the back of the 5 Series GT in the showroom, then it made sense.

Dog ugly, and not sure it goes with the BMW driving ethos, but Superb levels of space in the rear. Car to be driven in rather than drive I'd say.

I havent actually seen a GT in reality yet. They must not have sold 10 of them in Ireland.

Hilariously enough, one of them overtook me this morning as I was heading up to the Airport. Ugly looking b*stard of a yoke

When I saw it for the first time I hadn't even heard of the car. I love Beemers, but this thing shocked me. And then I saw the driver. AHA! A dog for a dog. :D

Hopefully the awful looking Audi a5 sportback suffers a similar fate

I couldn't give a fook about the 5 series GT, nor about the people who decide to buy them. I do have issue with the sh1t people come on here talking about the 5-GT not being in the ethos of 'Ultimate Driving Machine', have you driven one? are they sh1t ? The same sh1t was spouted about the Cayenne being an insult to Porsche - have the people Porsche sells cars to so offended they sold less 911's since the introduction of thos cars ? Are you surprised a corporation is trying to make money rather than build cars that don't offend people in Ireland who probably aren't even their customers anyway ?

However, the big news from this article is the crazy decision to not supply the 5 series touring to the US market - what the hell are they at ?

The x1, x3, x6, 5 GT and 3 GT (yes they are bringing one out!) should be gotten rid of. They ruin BMW for me anyways!

Have to disagree with you there I have seen a few around and I think they look good. I actually went up to see what it was when I saw one for the first time from a distance.

Good to know not everyone with oddles of money has such poor taste:

Also good to know that not everyone is a sheep and that BMW cannot get away with selling any old rubbish purely because it has a 'BMW' badge on the bonnet.
While I rejoice at this, I sadden that more people must have purchased the even worse looking X6, and that's not getting canned.
The baffling thing is, that while the 5-series GT is ugly, it's actually a practical and comfortable car. The X6 is neither really, and even uglier.

Those cars allow BMW to pour money into a areas which do not give an adequate return on investment such as its M range/racing teams. Without the cars that you have mentioned we we may not see them. Same with porsche and the cayenne

I doubt they get much return on the cars I mentioned. Sure isn't the GT 5 a flop and wouldn't they have development costs on these too?

All M cars are usually sold pretty quick.
