Apprentice Mechanics

    Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong place but just looking for advice as I haven't a clue.

A family member has recently been let go from his apprentice , he would possibly have done as far as phase 4 of his apprentice if I am correct.

Is there many if any vacancies in garages in Dublin for apprentices who have done a couple of the phases?

Is he better off calling into individual garages as a pose to just sending a letter with a CV in?

    Thanks in advance

I was in te same boat last year, I'm an electrician though. Start calling around, it's the same as looking for any job. Also keep an eye on FAS' job section, jobs pop up there from time to time but they'd be snapped up very quickly so I'd be checking every day

Get on to FAS, they have a redundant apprentice scheme in place where if an apprentice has been made redundant before finishing their phases another garage can hire them and they'll be paid by FAS effectivly costing the garage nothing, we have one here in the garage at the moment.

I got a job on the same scheme as mentioned above. AFAIK the emPloyer can't have let any apprentices go due to lack of work in the last 18 months, I'd say there's only a handful of garages that'll qualify for it.

They don't pay all my wages though, it's roughly costing my employer the same as a 1st year apprentice for me (4th year) so if you find a garage that qualifies then it is a win win

Hi, just came across this topic and thought i'd reply as i'm in a similar situation.

As said, the Redundant Apprentice Placement Sceme will apply to him. For phase-5 i think it's a 26 week duration and the wages are e350.00 pw.

It could be worse, he could be in my position. I've passed all 7-phases and yet i can't get my certificate because i wasn't registered for 4 years before i was made redundant.

The Redundant Apprentice Placement Sceme doesn't apply to me because i've already completed my final assessment.

The only sceme FAS have set up for apprentices like me is called Recognition of Prior Learning but it's a joke because it does NOT recognise any prior learning. I was in A.I.T studying Mecahnical Engineering for a full term prior to my apprenticeship and the college have supplied evidence to confirm this - but FAS say it doesn't count!

They say my only option is to find employment but nobody will employ a phase-"8" apprentice and pay them full wage, when the can employ a phase-7 apprentice at no cost (through the placement sceme)

There's lots of apprentices in this position and FAS refuse to run a course that allows short-on-time apprentices to finish their training.

I apologise if this seems like a thread hi-jack, i didn't mean to go on and on but i think it's important that people hear how fas are treating apprentices in the final steps of their training...

    It's a joke!!
