Corsa cdti 1.3 trouble

    Hi folks,
just looking for a bit of advice here so thanks in advance for any help.

The story is the maintenance light has come on in my 07 Corsa 1.3 cdti. It was running ok but I have started to notice that if I accelerate hard it seems to lose power and it definitely doesn't feel as 'nippy' as it used to.

My local mechanic has put it on the computer and he said that it was showing up a porblem with the glow plugs - but this doesnt make much sense as it is not having any problems starting or anything like that? He has quoted me €100 to replace all four glow plugs (he said you cant replace only one as there is no way of knowing which is faulty) and €50 for labour. I have no problem paying this if it sorts out the problem. It's just I had it serviced with this guy only 2 months ago and he replaced all the relevant filters so I'm just disppointed it's giving bother again now so soon.

Anyway just wondering how this sounds to you? Really just want to get the whole thing sorted.

    Cheers

When he says that there is no way of telling which one is giving trouble, what he means is that he either doesn't know how to check them or couldn't be bothered. Having said that, depending on the kms you have on the car, they may be due a change anyway.

If, however, there is a fault with the glow plugs, it unlikely to have anything to do with having it serviced as they are not something that would be touched during a standard service and unfortunatly, having the filters and oil etc changed doesn't mean the car will be free of any fault for another year.

IMO, if he is competant then he will have diagnosed the problem correctly so ask him if he is certain that replacing them will solve the problem.
If you get the "well we'll start with the glow plugs and see how it goes, if that doesn't fix it then you might have to change blah blah", answer then my advice is bring it to a mechanic who can diagnose the problem properly.

How would a problem with the glow plugs have any thing to do with the running problems with the car?I would have thought that faulty plugs would only be a problem with starting the car from cold only.I am not too familiar with diesels, but does the glow plug light not double up as the engine management light on diesels?

Would it be mainly used for short, stop/start journeys? I think that has a DPF and they are a bugger on short journeys on that engine.

I know on the 320d that the glow plugs play a part in the combustion process while the engine is warming up. If they are failing I believe that MPG and performance can be affected on that particular model.

That's why I'm having doubts about his diagnosis of the glow plugs needing replacing. Like I said it's starting ok every time.

I drive 30 miles to work each day and home again all on motorway so don't think that would be considered as only being used for a short, stop/start journey? Or would it? I know it's not big mileage either? There's nearly 70K miles on it.

Has anyone any idea what could be causing the loss in power when I accelerate hard?

It could be a few issues, MAF, loose boost pipe etc. You will need to have it looked at by a mechanic really. You can try unplugging the MAF to see if it runs better unplugged.

Did you consider getting a second opinion from another mechanic?
