Nursing Fetac one year

Hi, Just a quick question for anyone that is doing / has done this Fetac pre-nursing course. I am thinking of applying for this course as a mature student. Can you tell me if there is a lot of maths involved? I don't have a maths brain at all, so am hoping not!!;)
I guess same goes for a nursing degree too, is there a lot of maths involved?

Also, with the modules, I have been reading that you really need to get a distinction in 8 of them to be in with any sort of chance of getting a place with a college in Ireland. This is the route I hope to go. If you keep your head down, attend all classes & study, is it possible to achieve this, or do you need to be a "super brain"
Is it one exam at the end of the year, or an exam at the end of each module?

    Thanks in advance

im just after completing this course.
i have a young son, attended all classes and managed to keep up my employment and i feel i will get my 8 distinctions. that's not to say the year is a doddle; its not! there are alot of assigments throughout the year so it is important to keep up and do the work as it is given to you.
there will be an exam for nearly every module. there is no maths, well there wasnt in the pre-nursing course i did anyway.
    the modules were as follows;
anatomy and physiology (exam at end)
    care provision and practice
introduction to nursing (exam at end)
human growth and development (exam at end)
    communications
    work experience
    computers
safety and health at work (exam at end)
    manual handling
    first aid (exam)

you apply directly to the college/institute where you would like to do the course, it's not classed as mature entry when its fetac. anyone can apply.

brilliant course you will go on work experience during it. we had 2weeks of block placement and they ended up taking me on in my place of work experience. i continue to work there now so at least thats something.

its supposedly very hard to get into college afterwards relying solely on fetac results. you will be fine as you will be able to apply for nursing/midwifery(if you wish) as a mature student.

alternatively, you can apply to england using ucas. most colleges are affiliated with uk colleges so that is the route most students take upon completion of this course.

good luck, if theres anything else you wish to know please pm me!

Thank-you for your detailed reply. That is great to know about the course etc. I would love to get a place here in Ireland for nursing, but who knows. I don't think England would be an option for me as I have a young son too, so would have to stay here. Well done that you got kept on in the work placement too. Thanks again and best of luck

This is an excellent course to get into UK nursing. Try and establish that the course you do has links with UK teaching hospital, they actually come over here looking for people that have done this course in the PLC where I teach. The work experience is considered particularly valuable.

Not really, its not my area at all, I think the FETAC qualification is not as useful here to get into nursing, but someone with more direct knowledge night give you a more reliable answer. This might help, but note it is for 2010 http://www2.cao.ie/fetac/FETACNursingQuota.pdf

Which would be the best course to study the FETAC pre-nursing in? In my opinion, for a 1 year fetac course its not overly worth your time moving far, so just try do it in your home town if possible.

Forgive me if i am wrong but pre nursing is level 1 ??? health care assistant is level 5 , they will both get you into the nursing degree but the health care assistant one will get you a job , so why do people still opt for the level 1 ???

No, both the Nursing and Healthcare Assistant are level 5.

The Pre-nursing course is the ONLY one that will help you progress onto nursing. Pre nursing also gives you the title of Healthcare assistant at the end, so its a win-win course.

THe Healthcare Assistant level 5 course only gives you the title.

    Untrue.

Nursing Studies/Pre-Nursing/Introduction to Nursing (DCHSN), Healthcare Support (DHSXX) and Community and Health Services (DCHSX) can all get you into nursing provided you have the right modules (and grades).

    See here: https://myucd.ucd.ie/admission/fetac.ezc#DN450

Just to add, if you are looking for work as a HCA, the Healthcare Support course includes more work experience than the Nursing Studies course (in my college six weeks vs two weeks), which is advantageous when looking for work after graduation.

Bear in mind that these awards are being deactivated and are being replaced with new awards, which may change the situation. Applicants for Nursing Studies should find out the new module names and codes offered by the PLC college and check them against the ones required by the 3rd level colleges.
