Why don't people wink at each other anymore?,I mean just to say hello,a quick wink of the right eye regardless if it's at a man or woman. Its uniquely Irish but like many things we just don't do it any more.

So how you doing After Hours ;)

Cos people don't want to get arrested. Same with whistling, no one whistles anymore.

because it either gets you arrested, or beaten up, or both.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

It's by no means uniquely Irish. I do it sometimes. Although I try not to as it makes me look like I'm having a stroke.

Whistling always annoyed me for some reason.

My father still winks and whistles, so ye can wink and whistle together.

I wink at young schoolgirls all the time, they never seem quite comfortable about it, but I'm just being friendly.

    PC gone mad!

Whistling is incredibly irritating, worst are the ***** who don't even whistle an actual tune, just random incoherent jibberish.

Is 'fipping' the AH slang for winking?

Why in the name of GOD... do people around here keep thinking things that people in general do are uniquely Irish!?!?

I still wink at my mates. I like to whistle. Except in work, my boss band whistling

I still wink at people, a wink and a smile is always nice when you cant speak to the person, exampe would be at work. In fact off the top of my head I can think of 3 or 4 times in the last few days I have seen people wink, so yes people do still wink ;)

I think it's really sleazy! I know a couple of guys who don't bother saying hi to girls they know if they pass them, they just wink at them and keep strutting along. In fairness, those two are full of themselves anyway but it's just really creepy, makes me shudder.

On the other hand, it's different if it's one of my friends - maybe it depends on the facial expression at the time? Or how they're walking as they pass by? Or maybe just who they are...

I dunno, but sleazy guys winking? No thanks...

I think it can be quite sexy coming from the right person at the right time.

Look at Simon Cowell for instance he winks all the time on X-Factor and it's possibly the sexiest thing in the world!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭Sanjuro

I wink at certain people if they walk into a party or whatever and I cant say hello right away. It's almost involuntary. And I feel like a tit afterwards.

The slow motion wink captured on camera is cool and you can always reply it over and over or even pause it so that it looks like they have one eye shut

/ Ho hum , back to picking wings of dead fly's now

For it to be a proper Irish wink it needs to be accompanied simultaneously with a sharp sideways movement of the head and a clicking sound made with the tongue.;)

Often verbally accompanied with a "Howye John Joe"

depends on the person, simon cowell can get away with it but if someone else for example brendan kilkenny winked at you, you'd probably cross the road and start walking faster
    Me neither

At first I was thinking this thread would have been so much different with one little typo, but from reading through the comments it'd probably be pretty much the same, tbh :D

If I ever fancied a female colleague in the past, I'd sometimes wink at them and give them a little slap in the arse as I was passing them in the corridor.

I beleive in non-sexist work boundaries though so the wink was never a stagy, ostentatious one and was always performed in a subtle and respectful manner.

That's exactly it...and why I said it is sexy coming from the correct person at the right time! Simon Cowell would always be the correct person at any time!

Still wink at people from time to time. Mostly people I know though, rarely strangers although I have done that too, often confuses the hell out of them and there's nothing like leaving a random stranger standing there with a big puzzled head wondering if they know you or not.

It tends to cheer people up I find, a grin a wink and a 'howaya?' ;)

Ha ha, seriously think it's sexy coming from the right person as Lostgirly puts it! Not a Father Jack type! :pac:

I know a girl that subtly winks whenever she says "you know what I mean".. It's hard to put into words actually but I think it's just so cute!

Ha, in hindsight it looks like I've just described a character from D'unbelieveables. She's actually a cute little polish girl. :)

    I'm a winker.

I do it all the time. When I bump into or I'm meeting up with somebody I know. Its just a habit that came out of nowhere really as I don't really know any other winkers.

I do the standard Wink-Smile-Click followed by a toothy grin.

    Winking FTW

Does anybody use winking as a way of letting someone know you're interested?

No, im fairly certain that only irish people can wink and whistle.
