It seems nowadays there is an endless stream of sequels in movies and games and the next new popstar sensation seems to the same as the old.
Hollywood is regurgitating the same old stories year in year out with no originality or either doing remakes of old movies.
Even in music there doesn't seem to be the same buzz or movements that was around in the early/mid 90s with the rave scene/grunge/brit pop. Nowadays it's just teenie boppers, talent show singers and boybands recycled year after year.

Holywood have been doing remakes since the 70's, it's hardly a new thing...

I think we've worn everything out at the moment pretty much... we just have to wait until we catch up with ourselves and new ideas begin again. :D

I think the best popular movements take root in hard times, someone or something captures the imagination of the general public and they run with it

Theres little risk in extending a sucessful franchise of movies, but theres considerable risk in commissioning an original. Look at those Fast and Furious films, they should have stopped a long time ago but because they have a core of fans, they guarentee a minimium return.

Its the same with publishers, they don't take risks on new authors like they could, because established authors have a fanbase they know they'll get a return from.

Remakes are like sequels in so far as you're giving the public something they've already proven they want, which minimises risk again.

Its all about the money (money, money:)).

They've been doing if for longer than that D. Ben hur the movie? At least two of them before the Charlton Heston version in 1959. Mutiny on the bounty? Versions in 1916, 1932, 1935, 1962(the Brando version) and the last in 1986. This does not include made for TV movies. Religious theme stuff forget about it.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Jaws is just Moby Dick with a shark. I guess popular culture has been losing it's originality since at least the 1850's.

Remakes have been happening since, well, spoken word originated.

Someone would tell a story, someone else would make a change and retell it.

There are dozens of movies written each year that are mostly original, whether they get made or distributed it as different matter.

Originality isn't dying out, it's just not profitable to take extreme risks in the entertainment industry.

I know this may sound a tad ridiculous...

Lack of Drugs or lack of new drugs to say to the least.

Also the recession should start throwing up a new crop of people too!
