    Hi All
I am applying as a Mature Student to DCU this year and they say they are offering me a place on the course (yay!)....
I am basically wondering does anybody out there know if the mature student grant covers your accommodation, or do you have to apply for a separate grant for that? or is that to do with Social Welfare and nothing to do with VEC?
Also any information at all whatsoever about what the grant covers would be useful ....;) i don't know anyone else to ask.....
    Becca ;)

    Firstly, congrats :)
I am basically wondering does anybody out there know if the mature student grant covers your accommodation, or do you have to apply for a separate grant for that?

The grant covers maintenance, which helps with living costs during your study, the amount you get depends greatly on factors such as how much you are earning, if you are independent of your parents, how far you live from college etc. It does not cover your accomodation rents/costs per month (if that's what you kind of meant). Currently the higher rate of adjacent amount for mature students (mature students are not automatically entitled to non-adjacent rate anymore) is about €1250-1300 a year.
is that to do with Social Welfare and nothing to do with VEC?

Yes. They are seperate government bodies dealing with different situations. I don't know much about the social welfare aspect of returning to education but I know you can be in receipt of the back to education allowance if you have been out of work for a certain period. Also you cannot apply for a maintenance grant while on the BTEA.
Also any information at all whatsoever about what the grant covers would be useful ....;) i don't know anyone else to ask.....

While you cannot apply for the maintenance grant while in receipt of BTEA. You can however get your student registration fees covered by your local authority (which is the €1500 per year reg fees etc). Basically the same as applying for your grant but you will only get this covered.
