    Hi folks,

I really want to get a mod for my Marlin 177 HMR as there is quite a loud crack from it, but I have been told before that as the HMR ammo is not suitable to be silenced. Has anyone done this before and if so did it make any difference.

    Thanks,
    Cyber

they make a small difference, they take away some of the craic. a lot of people seem to be using the sak mod and its the best value too.

and isnt it a .17 hmr. air riffle is a .177, i think

It makes a big difference, it still sounds like a .22lr but reduces the loud booming noise.

Worth getting though, for such a little round they make quite a noise

there is a couple of fields with in a few miles of me full of rabbits only thing is there is also a stud farm there also so dont want to be disturbing the horses either.

Savage little calibre for small to mid vermin though also.

You're going to have a supersonic "crack" from the HMR, nothing you can do about that. It'll sound louder/quieter depending on your surroundings and the wind.

What you can moderate is the sound of the gasses exiting the barrel after the bullet, that'd be described I guess as the "boom".

The reason a .22lr subsonic is so quiet is it's not breaking the sound barrier, so no "crack", and with a mod, no "boom" either.

HMR, you can control the "Boom" but not the "crack". SAK is what's on mine also.

thanks for that... Nearly impossible to get a second shot on multi targets when the crack is so loud.

I have a sak on my 17 hmr marlin and i tell you all you hear is the air gushing out of the rifle and the supersonic bang. I also find for some strange reason the rifle shoots flatter with the silencer on something to do with the silencer increasing the velocity.

You'll find with a moderated HMR, and it's ballistic tipped bullets which seem to have an almost soft audible impact, that rabbits find it very hard to figure out what's going on. I have shot multiple rabbits beside each other.

With a moderated .22lr, while quieter to our ears, the impact of the .22lr bullet seems to make quite a thud on impact. So bugs gets a fright when his buddy beside him makes that noise.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm picking up my 455 hmr next week and I'm wondering whether to get a SAK or a Parker-Hale mod. Is there much difference. Price is about the same.

if you buy any of them they will fit your marlin. bring the mod to the gunsmith with the gun and he'l but the proper size thread on it. sak is still best for the money

I have 2 mods to use on my HMR, a SAK and an LEI. Both do a good job of taming the "boom". Value for money the SAK wins hands down but the LEI adds less to the barrel, infact you'd hardly notice its screwed on, and marginally does a better job probably because its calibre specific. It also looks the part:p
Without either tho, its like going out with the 12 gauge:)
