Help!!! I had a fab dress picked out for a friends wedding but I broke a bone in my ankle over the weekend & I don't know what to do now!! I wont even be able to go to the hen.. I now have a big cast up to the knee & stupid crutches! :(

For the wedding I had a fab dress that comes to the knee and high peep toe shoes.. I presume I can't wear the heels.. Should I wear a maxi dress to hide the big cast?? I dont really like them & don't find them dressy enough for a wedding & I'm so short they don't suit my figure .:(
If anyone can give me some advice I'd be eternally grateful

Oh poor you :( I was in a car crash a couple of days before a friends wedding, luckily nothing was broken but I had an absolutely massive bruise covering nearly my whole leg, I wore the dress i'd planned to wear with a big white bandage on my leg and I didn't really care what anyone thought, I had no time to find a new dress anyway!

I broke my ankle in a car accident about 2 years ago, and let me tell you... trying to get around on the crutches was not fun!!
I personally wouldn't go for a long dress, such as a maxi dress. Sure, It will cover the cast, but you will still have crutches and personally, that just sounds dangerous. When you leave your crutch down on your maxi dress that trails on the ground, you could trip yourself up and break the other ankle!

Could you get yourself a nice pair of wedges to wear with your really nice dress? I found it pretty easy to get around in a pair of wedges. Both my father and boyfriend had other opinions on the matter, but it worked for me? The best thing is, you can adjust the height of the crutches too!!!

Failing that, get yourself a nice pair of flat sensible shoes ;)

(but stick with your nice dress! )

    :)

I don't think there's any point in hiding your cast. I mean, everyone will know anyway because of the crutches. Sure, you could get everyone to sign the cast! :D

Get a lovely pair of flat sandals/shoes to compliment the dress.

You should definitely stick with your original dress 'cause you sound like you're a lot happier with it.

And if you don't already own a maxi dress, you will have the hassle of trying to buy one on crutches.

I can't imagine high heels working, but I'm sure it's possible. Maybe practice around the house? Stick a pair of flats in your bag though...

I'll see if it fits me after a few months on crutches with no jogging!!

Thanks for all the advise.. I reckon a maxi would be dangerous.. I'm wobbly enough without the added flowing dress ;)

Any suggestions on daytime wear would be great though.
I don't have any nice jeans or any tracksuits other than my awful ones I wore to the gym...

On a more positive note perhaps, you might drop a dress size because getting around on crutches is quite strenuous. :)

What do you usually wear during the daytime? You can probably still wear a lot of the stuff especially dresses, skirts and shorts.

Also, while wearing impractical shoes is fine as a once off, but for day-to-day make sure you have a reliable pair of runners or shoes. Ideally ones that are flat, non-slip, well-fitting whose laces stay laced when walking for your own safety and convenience.

Bulky coats/hoodies mightn't necessarily fit well into the arm of crutches, so test out your jacket if you expect to be outside a lot on crutches. Although hopefully you won't need to wear a heavy stuff in the summer.

Just as an aside, pockets are a life-saver on crutches because it's very difficult to carry stuff. If you're buying new trousers definitely consider pockets. So something like cargo pants might be ideal. If you don't want to worry about pockets, buy or make a crutch bag (http://www.crutch-bag.co.uk/women-girls-crutches-accessory-crutchbag-crutch-bag-elbow-forearm-uk-crutches).

I lived in my pj's when I broke my ankle!! In my defence though, it was during the really bad ice and snow and it wasnt good to venture out.

What are you most comfortable in? Dresses and skirts would be the easiest. You're not trying to pull them on over a big awkward cast.

Failing that - boyfriend jeans. Nice wide legs, again just make sure they fit properly, or you risk tripping yourself up.

Shoes - Make sure your shoes fit you properly, and that you can get around comfortable in them, ensuring theyre not flipping and flopping as you walk.
Try and avoid those flat ballet pump styles though, because theres absolutely no support in them or the only good foot you have!!

On the upside - you will have arms TO DIE FOR when your 6 weeks are up!!

Oh - and not medical advice, just a tip -- make sure you get physio AS SOON as the cast comes off. I had to wait 3 weeks before physio started, and two years later, Im still in physio!

    Good luck!

Thanks for all the great advice.. I wear a lot of dresses & leggings but have been mostly in pjs & long skirts the last few days.
I'm sure I'll figure it all out. I'll have plenty of time to anyway :p

I wouldnt bother trying to cover cast cos that wont happen! it'l be a talking point if anything! and as someone else said could be harder it get around in a maxi! try a few things on and see what you feel most comfortable in!
