Wireless connectivitiy Problems with iMac and Lynksys Router

Over the last few weeks, my wireless connection has been getting progressivly worse.
It was coming and going every few hours.
I think it has now gone fully. Has not been working for 2 days.

I have an iMac G5, and I am using a Lynksys Wireless G Router WRT54G.
Everything works fine on my Windows Laptop.

I can connect to the wireless on the iMac, and I am getting full strength signal, but cannot connect to the internet no matter what browser I use.

I have been looking online to try find some info and there appears to be a number of reasons why this may happen.

A common theme across many websites and forums is a compatibility issue with Lynksys routers and Mac.
Many people make reference to change the DNS settings on the router to fix the issue.

Has anyone else experienced this before, or can anyone give me advice?

Is the router set so it obtains the dns servers from your provider? You can try defining them so its permanently set (ask your provider for which ones to use). Alternatively you can use someone like OpenDNS I've found much better performance and reliability with them.

If it worked fine before then it's not a compatibility issue.

First thing to try is to change your wireless channel. Actually, the fist thing to try is turning it off an on again.

Also, make sure your router has plenty of access to fresh air - they can overheat if sat on top of a sky box or something warm.

    thanks for the feedback

i'm not too sure about the DNS settings , I have never changed them, so I assume so.

it was extremely warm alright , so i've moved it off the UPC box.

i have just updated the firmware, and it's working now. i will see for how long...

the router itself is probably 7-8 years old at this stage.

Can you see the Windows machine on the Finder window ? It would appear under Shared on the left pane of the window ? If you can then the problem isn't with Airport.

If Windows or other shares are visable then try adjusting the MTU on the Airport settings:

System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > Ethernet

If it's set to Configure:Automatically then try a different value like 1400 and see if there's a difference.

updating the firmware on the router seems to have done the trick.
it's been working ok for 3-4 days now.

    fingers crossed.
