my ess has taken a notion to jumping sheep wire with the the double barb at top when he is on a ditch and there is a height down to the ground is this a wise idea especialy with the barbs? i am worried att his incase the worst should happen and he would slit his stomach :( if people have a problem with him jumping these fences wat would be the best way to get him to stop?

Gamekeeper had an article in the 'Shooting Times' some time ago about his labrador jumping barbed wire - caught the testicles sac.....tore the whole lot off!!!!!!!!!!!.........dog was bleeding profusely and couldn't be saved........had to be put down.

A lad I was shooting pheasants with last season had an injury with his springer. The springer jumped the barbed wire & cut the soft skin under his front armpit..........very nasty wound.......like a long knife cut with the familiar L shape at the end.

The dog needed 23 stitches. All okay in the end except for a hefty vet's bill.

If I've to get my cocker to jump over barbed wire I will put my jacket on it to cover barbs.....doesn't always work though as she can meet barbed wire dividing cover & just jumps over it...have to hope for the best then. If I can I will try to avoid the dog jumping barbed wire.go farther down to gap / gate etc.

my shooting buddy had his springer nearly slice all his man hood off:eek:

last season the barbwire put a deep slice threw the back leg needing stitches

best advise is stop the dog when he looks like he going to do it,i always prop my foot underneath the sheep wire and make a gap so he can come under.
Theres a few times where he jumped thru the 2 bits of barb wire on top of the sheepwire but after hearing and seeing some of the after effects, i would rather lift him over. He seems to find a way thru though without lifting;)

You could try one of those electric fences (Petsafe or Innotec) with the collar on the dog.
It will only shock the dog and not any "visitors".

The dog hears a clicking noise as it approaches the fence and then gets a shock if they continue to get closer.
They learn very quick (within a couple of hours) not to get too close.

i had the sprocker out during the season and she was jumping a small 3 foot high fence around a plantation with a length of straining wire at the top..the dogs pad ended up getting caught in the straining wire and she was in fair pain with it..whinging and any time i went near the paw she went to nip me foot..lucky for me i had a small wire cutters in the game bag which i always bring when i have the dogs out...just in case..anyways if you come to a gap that makes you worry about, go with your instinct and just move down the ditch or fenceline to a better spot..or even just pull up the bottom of the wire to let the dog under

Prob., a dumb question but forgive me as I'm a townie, why would you need barbed wire on a sheep fence? Is just habit in fence construction or can the sheep jump to that degree? If they can would it not damage the sheep? If it wouldn't damage the sheep what's the point in having it as a deterrent to jumping? (apart from wanting to rip the a*se out of hunters trousers)

Always wondered that as well? I think it's to stop shooting folk like us :D breaking the fence by getting over it LOL. Could be it's for cattle and horses but haven't the baldest idea. The amount of times I ripped the bollox out of myself getting over barb wire isnt funny  bring back the stys for getting into each field !

i once saw an ess bitch that ripped most of her belly skin off after jumping barbed wire not a pleasant sight if you can train them to wait for you then that's a better job in my book either put your arm on the wire or coat

the barbed wire is simply there to stop cattle making a mess of the sheep wire if you don't use it and they are grazed in those fields they just press down on the sheep wire to get a fresh bite of grass in the next field and snap the top strand
just a word to the wise lads when your crossing wire just remamber it costs the farmer about 8 euro a metre to get sheep wire and proper posts put up
if it was my fence and i saw lads climbing it , they'd never set foot on the land again

Petsafe have started doing wireless fences also, this signal is in a circular radius so you can put it before the wire. You can get them on www.petshoponline.ie
