Eircom email - IMAP problem

    Hey all,

I'm a bit out of my depth here, so will try to explain best I can.

My wife was having probs with her POP3 Eircom account, partly because the .pst was huge & party due to a fault with the hard drive.

She uses her email address for work, so its pretty important to have constant access. I was advised to create a gmail account & change the Eircom one to IMAP, linking the two so gmail would provide an additional backup & worst case, she could access her mail from it.

I've subsequently archived a load of email so the file is very manageable & we've now upgraded the PC. She's using Windows 7 & windows live email.

For some reason now, since setting up email on the new pc, when she sends from her new PC, her email address is showing as gmail & the sent folder all appears with her name, not the person that she's sent to.

Its probably a setting in the Account, but I'm not 100% sure what I should be looking at & dont want to risk losing anything.

    Any ideas ?

Ok fixed the sent mail 'title' issue, but outgoing mail still showing gmail & not eircom......

use gmail on line, google gears if you can still get it should allow you to synch offline (linux users need not apply )

outlook is a disaster for imap (it's designed to be used with exchange so not really a surprise)
    - it's a manal synch if you insist on imap use thunderbird

PST files - best option is to archive old email to a second PST and then open it outlook so you can see both new and old PST files. (Don't forget to backup PST's every so oftern too) Yes you can have whopping great big PST's but NO it's not a good idea, several smaller ones are more stable and faster to repair

there are PST repair tools too

if you need to free up space search based on size > 1MB and delete/archive the biggest ones first,

Thanks - I tried to get her to use Gmail, but she was insistent on Outlook on the old PC and insistent on Windows mail live on the new one :(

In fairness it seem to be running ok, just the outgoing mail now showing as from the gmail account, not the eircom one - I had IMAP set up on the old PC using outlook & all outgoing showed eircom.

I've checked in Gmail & setting show outgoing headed as Eircom, but it just aint working.............

Best bet is to try and repair the .pst first. Instructions at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/repair-an-ost-or-pst-file-in-outlook-HA001056300.aspx

I always try to make sure the pst stays below 2GB and archive everything over 90 days
