Job interviews what to expect 2011

I had an interview today for a sales job, which looked and sounded pretty good.
After asking my salary expectations, I was told there would be an 8 week training programe to learn the producst and techniques etc., Fine.
However, I was advised there was no base salary and 8 sales a week were expected to receive comission.
I was also told, for the 8 weeks training I would receive 100 euro a week.
Are employers really offering this and are people actually accepting roles like this? I mean the dole is 180 a week, what would you choose?

You haven't had an interview with an 'employer'. You are the victim of an organised door to door sales scam. Browse this forum, it will really open your eyes. By the way, it is much better to remain on the dole than to partake in this semi legal pyramid scheme. Read into it, it truly is shocking.,

being part of the door to door world myself i have never heard of that before, where it is an 8 week training, and 100e per week, most door to door sales roles are commission based with no base salary, but like you said 100e no matter what you sell a week while you train ??? i would ask some questions about that.

    Hi there
I was a victim of that before - steer well clear. I ended up getting in a load of debt and it was awful. On the upside, I learned that sales is NOT my strong point and that marketing is better suited to my skills.

Cheeky side note - we're after a sales person, there's no training scheme or anything like that but training on the job will be provided. If you want to fire over you're CV I will get the MD to look it over. We're looking for an immediate start pretty much - contract and all that will be sorted as soon as you start - which is the best way to run things.

I would urge extreme caution OP and do not respond to the huckster above. We are a country with 14% unemployment so I hardly think a legitimate 'marketing' company needs to beg on boards.ie for workers.

    Hello there!

I hope you weren't referring to me as a "huckster"? I happened upon the post, rather than needing to "beg on boards.ie for workers" - I also searched for some dresses on adverts.ie - does that make me a "huckster" too?

Apologies for bringing out the cynic in you - I should hope that it doesn't deter anyone from replying to my post. With 14% unemployment in Ireland, I am hopeful we can fill the position soon.

Take care and have a great Friday!

    Cheers!

    Aoife

Well Aoife, Do you pay your workers a national minimum wage or are they going to be technically 'self employed'? I think I'm right to be cynical, anyone that is offering 'a great job' via boards.ie and all that you'd have to do to get it is to email this anonymous internet person... well... You'd have to be pretty naive, wouldn't you.

It's above minimum wage - if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. The comment I made about the job was a cheeky aside. Naive, maybe, but I've made my point.

    Good luck

Jaysus, getting accused of being a "huckster" for simply trying to give someone a dig out, what next?

One look at the website and you can tell that her company aren't into the door-to-door, briefcase full of tat thing that the OP was "interviewed" for.

Can people please be careful about the language that is used. Commission only door to door sales might not be a fun or easy job, but do not use terms like "scam" or "huckster".

@Aoife - please see the vacancies sticky thread, where you can post roles, provided you can supply all the required info. Don't post contact details here please

    Hi Eoin
Thanks for getting back to me. Again, it was a side note to be honest - apologies.

@Seamus - cheers for the good will.
