Considering a move from Hollywood Lakes at the end of this year and looking at my options. H/L seems to be turning into a social club lately with Fourball Betterball being played almost weekly. Roganstown was on my radar for a while but I have concerns for it's future (similar concerns for H/L) so now I'm turning my attention to Ashbourne GC.

Any views on the track from members or visitors. I played it some years ago. From memory I can remember some tough holes around the Broadmeadow river which the members refer to as Amen Corner ! Does anyone know what the predominant competition format is (Singles hopefully as handicap reduction is the main aim !).

You wont be the last to think about jumping ship! I'm thinking about moving on also! You can check on Howdidido website the results of ashbourne golf club and the comp format on the results page.
I played Ashbourne two weeks ago and it was in great condition, really nice greens and a good challenge!

They have an open scratch cup on this weekend

We still have our eyes on Swords Open for next year, hopefully they have the BRS system by then

Ashbourne is in great condition at the minute.

Main competitions are at the weekends are singles(Strokes or Stableford) off the back markers with maybe 1 fourball etc.. on 1 weekend day a month or the bank holiday.

BRS works well, comps open the Monday and Tuesday before the weekend.

You can see the scores on HowdidIdo. The April medal is a freak result though!!

Semi-open singles for the men every Wednesday, Thursday is ladies day.

Also the food is excellent and a very good pro shop.

Thanks for the info. I had a quick look at Howdidido and it seems to be 3 singles out of every 2 weekends (3 out of 4 comps which is ok).

Can I assume you're a member given your name "AGC" ? What kind of membership numbers do they have ? I'm hearing 500 from a high of 950 at one time. Any signals that they might drop the €600 "hello money" next year which is in the €2,000 current offer ? Drainage issues - Playability in winter time etc ? Any info appreciated

    Yeah I am a member.

I don't think they will drop it. It has gone from €10,000 to €2,000 to €600 and I think they will want to keep something but you never know.

Drainage is fine, the snow like everywhere kept it closed this winter. Course is very well looked after.

Exact numbers on members I honestly don't know. They were down this year but not to the levels of 450.

There is plaenty of comps to play in with matchplays etc... and the Inter Club is quite strong.

AldilaMan - you are considering a move from Hollywood Lakes at the end of this year because it has too many Fourball Betterball competitions?

Not the only reason but probably the straw that will break the camel's back. I like to play singles to try to reduce my handicap and having spoken to quite a lot of members over the last few months there are a good number of members with the same view. Check out some of my other posts for the other reasons. I did predict a loss in excess of 100 members after the fatal decision to increase the sub by €100 at November's agm. I believe that number is now 140 although we did gain 40 new members at €950 which is €400 less than established members have to pay. The current committee 's economic naivety is well on the way to bankrupting the club. Are you on this committee ?

BTW Strokes1 above seems to be looking to move elsewhere and he's only in H/Lakes 18 months. If the club can't hold on to the latest recruits then there's something very wrong with the club !

that is unreal value....600euro joining...our club still has it 2000 down from 7000 at peak... and committee in real need of a kick in the arse as members numbers down again...
ashbourne good social club as well as course too...

I believe there was a problem (with the GUI?) with having too many singles comps, thus allowing handicaps to go out over a short period.
You are not happy with the increased membership fee? What other "straws" are you referring to? I looked at your other posts and you seemed quite positive about the club.

Strokes1 has not detailed his reasons for wanting to "jump ship" - it may be personal & have nothing to do with the club?

I'm not here to justify myself to you or anyone else why I'm looking to leave H/Lakes. Having looked at some of you're older posts it would seem to me that you also share my goal of reducing your handicap which is more difficult to achieve by playing less singles competitions. Yes there was some talk about a recomendation by the GUI to reduce the number of singles but they have no power to enforce that. Maybe the GUI have taken a view on the club for winning McDonnell Cups in recent years with players holding allegedly dubious handicaps.

As for Strokes1 - I'll let him speak for himself, but we have exchanged PMs a few times so I might have the inside track.

    Hi
My reason for thinking about looking elsewhere is cost, pure and simple- (I am gonna be expected to pay €1300 next year in Hollywood- yet there are cheaper options down the road in Swords- and thats just one local example!)- I didnt pay any "hello money" so I can move when a suitable cheaper and similar quality course becomes available

And Im not interested in spending my time in the big costly clubhouse either- I joined to play golf not to drink tea!

    thanks
