Liability for car ins. cancellation fee after insurer ups premium

I moved address recently and notified quinn-direct of the new details, and they told me my premium would go up as a result - by 40%. I quickly shopped around and cancelled with them that same day to go elsewhere. The direct debit was due a couple of days after i cancelled and I was told this would happen before the balance could be settled... I thought they meant that I would get it refunded (I've been with them several years, btw). Got a call a few weeks later saying I owed *them* a further amount (roughly the value of a monthly instalment) and how would I like to pay? Turns out I didn't read the t&c before cancelling and they do state there is a 50 euro cancellation fee... Now normally I would say fair enough. The issue I have, though is this: I cancelled purely as a result of them increasing my premium by 40% - which I couldn't have known was going to be so significant when I agreed to t&c... I feel that i should contest this on this basis... anyone have any view?

Quinn Direct automatically renewed a motor premium for me without my consent years ago (around the mid to late 90s).
When I received the letter a few weeks later telling me to cough up, I rang them and told them where to go.
I believe that they are still looking for it but I have absolutely no intention of wasting a phone call on them to find out.

You did change the risk when you moved house. I feel for you, but I don't think you'd have much of a case legally. Might be worth giving the insurance ombudsmans office a quick call just in case?

I'd say you've no leg to stand on, it was you that changed the contract (by moving and changing your insurance risk) rather than them.

    I'm no lawyer mate...actually I am :p

Joking aside - you have no issue worth fighting with them over this.

They are still chasing me for €100 odd because I cancelled my insurance when I left Ireland. They have 2 chances of ever seeing it. Slim and none.

I hope for your sake you don't plan on returning any time soon - you sold your credit rating very cheaply.;)

Quinn are not capable of affecting your credit rating without first taking you to court. And for the amounts mentioned it, its not worth it for them.

Banks and credit card company's on the other hand you don't **** with.

They still do this, they send me out my new disc every year without me telling them to.
