    Something like this:

    Few questions ...

    - What are they called in English
    - Who in Ireland (preferably the Northwest) would sell or rent me one

Wind tipped over a tree today. The tree is still alive, but very loose in the ground. We're kinda attached to it and would like to put it upright again and tie it down for a while so that it could perhaps take stronger roots again.

(Thought I'd rather ask here where the real men are than over in gardening:D)

I have heard them referred to as a turfer. EDIT: actually it is spelt tirfor winch

The old man has one, you are welcome to borrow it if you want.

Good man Slidey ...I'll probably come back to you on that.
The next storm is forecast for Wednesday, I guess I'll have to wait and see if there even is any point in trying after that.
At the moment the tree is leaning about 20 degrees...any more lean and I'll be buying a chainsaw

Correct, it's a Tirfor and they come in different ratings. Very effective if a bit slow.

There's an ex military supplier in the UK with a load of S/H ones, you have to make sure the wire rope is good though, it's not standard stuff.

Also try a branch of HSS with lifting and access gear, you can hire them.

These are hand winches, or griphoists; Tirfor being probably the best known manufacturer, as the supplier of choice to many of the world's militaries.

Draper do a version, if there's an agent nearby:
