have a skoda 00 1.3mpi and its making a lot of noise which i originally thought was the exhaust, but it is clunking, tapping and loosing accelleration and cutting out.

Went to the mechanic, and he said it's not the exhaust its the timing chain, he said that its worn and needs replacing. He said for the whole timing kit and installation it would be around 500euro, just wondering if anyone can tell me is this usual or can i get it cheaper?

    cheers.

500 squids sound quite an expensive quote, shop around. The parts are quite cheap:

and the job itself does not sound too labour intensive. Check briskoda.net for details.

They are an old pushrod engine so the chain is very small with no tensioners etc so IMO thats bit expensive.

They take approx 3 hours to change without rushing.

Yea it seems as though the fitting is the expensive part, i found a skoda dealer in dublin that can get me the timing chain kit for 20euro, so just need to get the timing cover gasket and oil cover gasket? i think, have the oil already :)

Now just to find someone to fit it :P
