I see that RTE2 will start broadcasting in full native HD on Saturday for the Champions League and Magners league. Will UPC also be doing the same for their feed of RTE2?

Nobody knows. UPC don't act in a timely manner, so I would be surprised to see it in the short term.

Really starting to like this Twitter thing.

@UPC_HelpsYou_IE: Hi thanks for your tweet :) at present we don’t currently have RTE 2 HD included in our HD line up!

Unfortunately as you can only write 140 characters in a tweet, the UPC rep couldn't finish what they wanted to say. it would have been along the lines of "nor are we going to add any new decent channels soon despite promising that the ones lost recently would be replaced 'shortly'"

It will eventually appear, if for no other reason, I'd imagine the majority of Dublin-based RTÉ management and employees actually have UPC at home and will start to wonder why they are paying for a HD service they can't receive themselves. In seriousness, RTÉ have a "must-offer" obligation to UPC and UPC will eventually carry it. Sky could be a different kettle of fish, but I'd expect to see it eventually appear on Sky too.

Should be noted that if/when it does appear on UPC and Sky, it will work slightly differently to Saorview. On Saorview, there is just one RTÉ Two HD Select service and that downscales to SD when connected via SCART. On UPC and Sky there would be seperate RTÉ Two HD and SD channels on seperate EPG numbers.

If I was UPC I'd provide the RTE 2 HD soonish, to avoid people investigating Saorview and then being tempted into getting a Sat dish as well.

This is UPC's submission to the new channels consultation late last year

They said on the radio that time 6 new channels between June and July.

That's all very positive and upbeat.

I hope they are not counting RTE1+1, RTE NEws and RTE Junior as new channels. These channels are probably just somebody in RTE utilising a Sky+ box.

TV3, Sky and the Previous minister won't let them have new channels.

They spend all the money on Transmitters. So really it's just the same 2 channel content pretending to be 5 channels.

TV3's 3e is sort of new if you didn't have pay TV (Was channel 6). It's nothing like as good as TV3. ;)

UPC on their twitter feeds have indicated that discussions are taking place and they hope to have the channel(s) soon.

If I was RTE I would delay and push RTE 2 HD as much as possible - theres already a buzz about the champions league being in HD tomorrow for a one off cost
