Toyota Yaris Luna 2001 Humming Noise

    Hi everyone,

I was wondering if any one would be able to answer my question. I recently bought a Yaris, and when driving it from Dublin to Laois I noticed this humming sound when doing over 100km/h. It seems to really hum or buzz (almost like a mosquito, low but apparent) when driving over 80km/h. Anyone know what could be causing it, or is this normal because it's a small engine car?

    Thanks!

    Diana :)

I Suppose the first thing to do is determine where the noise is coming from.

Drive to the speed that the noise comes at, dip the clutch and let the engine revs fall. If noise continues its not the engine.

Does the noise happen in 4th gear or just 5th?

Does the noise change the faster you go? Do you notice any other noises otherwise, after a journey does any one wheel get really hot?,(you'd need wheel trims off to check this)

The noise seems to be coming from the front of the car (at first I thought it could be coming from the air vents), and it doesn't really change once I'm past the 80km/h mark, it's just a steady faint hum. And I'm not sure if it's just in 5th, will pay more attention to that. And no other noise except from this..

Sometimes the stream of air makes a whistling noise when it hits the wing mirror. Could be that.

This reminds me of father Dougal:

What's your favourite humming noise ted, mmmmm or hhhhhmm

Anyway I reckon it could be a wheel bearing causing the constant humming at speed.

The Diff bearings in the gearbox are a known week point on Yaris's and cause a noticable whine. Alternatively it could be a wheel bearing.....

    +1

Could well be the gearbox, dropped the diff in my Yaris before Xmas, weeks before this happened there was a high pitched whistle noise at speeds of 70 - 100kph.

Didn't know about the diff bearings but the rear wheel bearings can go. The hum from them is speed dependant so listen for a pitch change as you speed up or slow down. If it is that then you can get a scrappy one for 50 euro or a new one for 150 if it has no ABS, 250+ if it has ABS.

Could it be the brake pads slightly rubbing?

you say it sounds like its coming from the air vents.

the speaker covers on the dashboard are known to vibrate a little on the dash, put a little pressure on them and see if the noise goes away, they just snap on.

personally my yaris used to develop a buzz or a hum from the dash beteen 80/90 km/h and 120km/h, turns out my dial binnacle was loose, again put pressure on yours and see if it goes away.
