    Hi there,

I have few things I am concerned about my car VW Golf 05 1.4 petrol.

First thing is when I start driving the car chokes on 1st gear. You can feel enging getting those strong vibrations when you try to move from clutch only - without acceleration. This is the first car in which engine nearly cuts off when you start from clutch. On both 1st gear and reverse. Any idea what could cause this ?

Another thing I noticed is this rattling noise when I start the car which goes away after maybe temp. of the engine goes up.

I had recently changed filters, oil, brake pads in one of the garages and when I brake I can hear this grinding noise (not sure if its at the back or front) just as if the brake pads were worn out - which is really supprising as they were suppose to be new (so did the guy replace them or was I just billed for something on paper ?)

Last thing is I need a new front grill - black - any clue where I could get that ?

Can you recommend any good garage in South Dublin ?

    Thanks

A 1.4 petrol golf doesn't really have the power to be taking off without some throttle. It's a relatively weak engine in a relatively heavy body. It's possible with delicate clutch work, but it's not very good for it. You should really be giving it some throttle to move off, even if you just want to nudge forward a little. Diesel engines or bigger petrol engines might get away with, but not the 1.4 in a golf.

Is it a random rattling or more of a regular ticking, they have some kind of carbon filter thing which makes a fairly quick ticking noise when cold.

They might not have put any/enough copper grease on the pads, that would make them squeel like they were on the way out. If you go back and mention the noise they'll probably be happy to just put a little copper grease on and noise should dissapear, or you can buy a spray can of it yourself and spray a little onto the pads, just be careful, spraying grease on the pads reduces their braking for a little bit.

yup, this is totally the same on my 1.4 petrol golf.

robz do you what's the fuel efficiency in yours ?

mine is around 10-11l/100 km seems quite big, but I guess it must be the small engine power combined with heavy weight of the car as mentioned above.

I get 6 -7 L/100 in the mk4 ok it's a bit lighter but thats a fair difference. It's down to my driving style though.

yeah the fuel efficiency is quite bad, i can usually have it averaging out at around 8-9l/100km which is decent, but yeah its down to the driving style, like i'd drive quite efficiently most of the time

Golfs are killer on petrol, My 1.6 Corolla has much better fuel economy then my mate in his 1.4 golfs, they're just far too heavy for that engine.

I'm really trying to drive as smooth as possible. Don't grind the engine etc. And still I fill it up and computer shows 650/680/700 km on that tank. But then I get around 550-580 tops.

Also have this clicking noise when I start driving (and that's on 1st gear, sometimes hear it on 2nd) in right front wheel - maybe suspension or smth. And it's only when I start driving. Maybe something is loose there.

Ofcourse not to mention the rear light that goes quite often. Apart from that for a first car it's great. Happy I did not go for the Polo...way smaller than Golf.
