Looking at flightradar24 this morning, incredible speeds being achieved by eastbound pax jets, highest I've seen is 670mph (1070kph) just off the west coast of Ireland. That's really knocking on the sound barriers door:D

I'm sure once on PPRUNE I saw a picture the pilot had taken of a groundspeed reading of 1000 knots on his HSI display.

There is an Emirates A380 off the West Coast showing 705 mph tracking Eastnow thats fast for a giant of the air.

I imagine they need to be somewhat careful hitting speeds over 1,000km/h, what would be a typical rated maximum speed for a passenger aircraft before control or structural strength becomes an issue?

Remember it's air speed that is the limiting factor.
You may be propelled along by a 300 knot wind but your airspeed may well be only 500 knots.Your groundspeed would be 800 knots.

Great but spare a thought for the westbounds. Even though they'll stay out of the jetstream it'll still be a bit of a long haul.

I remember climbing into a brisk headwind once seeing a ground speed of 30 knots on the GPS. In fact the GPS actually decided it was on the ground and cut off the transponder and reset the air time counter to zero.

hehe, the westbounds were struggling to break 400mph this morning.
