Ringed Duck

A fox has just killed one of the resident duck living on the stream near our house. The duck (a male) has 3 individual red and green rings on his legs, one of which has a number on it.

Is it possible to know from the first three letters on the ring if the duck was from a farm or if it had been tagged by a group to record its progress (something similar to the first lot of numbers of a cattle tag representing the herd it initially came from)?

And if the latter, should I contact them to let them know what happened?

Sounds like a gunclub released bird, but try reporting to the BTO anyway.

There is a report a ringed bird link on their homepage.
