Car insurance for L-driver

    Hey guys,

Just a quick question: I'm a learner driver and have been insured with Tesco since December on my own car, which is registered in my name. My mam is also insured on it (she has her full license for years). My little sister recently got her learner permit and I very nicely said that she could learn to drive in my car (no other cars suitable to learn in in my house) but when I rang Tesco, they said they wouldn't be able to insure her as she was a L-driver and didn't have any driving experience. I pointed out that they'd insured me without any driving experience and the guy said he'd get a supervisor to ring me back...that was a week ago. I rang back and got a different person, same spiel. Anyway, if Tesco continue to refuse to insure her can she get her own insurance with a different company, or does she have to stick to the same company that I'm with, seeing as I'm the owner? I like Tesco, they were so cheap compared to the others, so I don't really want to have to switch!

No, you can only have one policy per car. Otherwise, people could insure the car a hundred times over, crash it and claim on each policy.

I would try quotes from some other insurers. You are more than entitled to cancel your poilicy with tesco mid term minus an admin fee and start anew.

The only minus to this is you would loose any no claims bonus earned for that year.

I would suggest trying quinn direct, they seem to be the best overall when on a provisional. Axa can be ok too but I think they are only cheaper once you've built up a no claims bonus.

Hope you and your sis get sorted, it's tough starting off isn't it!

thanks guys! I figured you couldn't have more than one policy on a car but wanted to be sure. When I was hunting for insurance, Quinn quoted me 1600e for 3rd party fire and theft, Axa quoted me 2100 for fully comp...Tesco were 900e for fully comp so it was a no brainer. Anyway finally got hold of someone in Tesco who could give me a definitive answer and apparently the criteria has gotten stricter so they won't insure her. Back to bumping around fields for her I guess :p
