Hi well I'm very good at this now I've gotten three families back to the 1750s which is a rarity which must mean I'm good... Well let's start do you know where your grand patents lived?? If so you can look in the 1911 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

This will tell you your g grandparents and their ages which is good as you can then go and look for their births and find their parents.. Online you can try familysearch

    www.familysearch.org

Next you can try the griffiths valuation which will show you your family and where they are
living it will give the head of the household which Is probably your gg grandfather

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

You can then look at various census and land records to get back into the 1700s ..
If you want into the 1600s this is viritually impossible unless you are of a rich Protestant family
with a lot of history or else your ancestors are from ni and they came over in the 1600s and
of course you can then look at estate records...

That's another thing if your family were living in an estate you can get pretty far back I'd you
look at the estate records down south that is..

Btw here is a good wee site as it includes several census lists free:
    http://www.CyndisList.com/ireland.htm

You can also try this site they are very good and they will actually trace your family back:
    www.rootschat.com

    Another good one is:

    www.rootsireland.ie
They have several revords dating to the 1600s

Remember that it will be a very testing time and it will take a long time don't give up you will
get there!? Also go round to your auld folk if they are still alove and ask them as I'm sure they'll know quote alot and be really intrested
