    Hi,

Just looking at the odds for some of the games and its extremely odd that Ac Milan (newly Crowned champs) are 6-1 to win at Udinese with nothing riding on the game . . What is going on , is there some sort of scandal going on ?

Is that it ? 6-1 on milan is long odds and it presumes they will just play pass the ball aswell ? Or is it because they are owned by Burlesconi ?

The Udinese game will be a draw

Yeh, that seems to be the common consensus . . I did see that Milan are fielding a strong enough team.

Shows the differance between England and Serie A that United are clear favourates to beat Blackpool despite not needing a win and may face punishment for resting players. .

It would be a scandal if Milan did win and denied Udinese a Champions League place, when Milan have nothing to play for. I'm 99% sure it'll be a draw (which is what Udinese need to secure 4th).

I doubt Lecce will put up much resistance against Lazio. Lecce are already safe and Lazio need a win to have any chance of getting 4th place.

Sampdoria (already relegated) are playing Roma who need a draw to make sure Juve don't catch them for the last Europa League place.

Why would it be a scandal professional footballers should always try to win.

    Because its Italy!!

They play the long game in Italy when it comes to favours.
Milan do Udinese a good turn today and in 5 years time when its Milan that need the favour then Udinese will remember.

Or today could be the payback of a good deed done back in the '80s.

Doing it this way means no-one need end up under the foundations of an autostrade.
    Capisce?

This is dealt with in the excellent book "The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro".

According to McGinniss, the last match of the season was fixed; he overheard players before the match discussing how Bari, who needed a victory to ensure promotion to Serie A, would be allowed to score three goals and win, with Castel di Sangro allowed one consolation goal from a penalty kick. One player explained to him that Bari had asked for a favor, and even had they not done so, Castel di Sangro was unlikely to win anyway because of the emotional and physical toll consumed by the relegation battle. However, because "it is demanded by il sistema" (McGinniss claims that several members of the Castel di Sangro squad told him that the pre-arrangement of results in end-of-season matches that are significant to one of the teams was common in Italian football), the team could not possibly refuse. Bari won the match 3–1, Castel di Sangro's goal coming from a penalty.

Yeah so utterly corrupt, certainly no convenient draws happen in the premier league

    Calciopoli?

As a legal case it is about as strong as the one against Gerry Conlan

Don't get me wrong, Italy and by extension the Lega Calcio are corrupt but both teams getting the result that they need (if its a draw, they are happy to play for it etc.) is a long established practice in Italian football, it's not coercion it's actually just laziness and pragmatism.

It's all well and good just saying Italian football is corrupt but unless you have a legally enshrined basis, it's just hearsay. The civil trial into the Juve relegation has shown that it's rather a cultural accession than a plot by malevolent oligarchy.

You just have to read the gambling thread about Italians leagues so see how fixed it is

One stand out game was in Serie B

    http://www.soccerway.com/matches/2011/05/13/italy/serie-b/ascoli-calcio/ac-siena/997714/

Siena 2 up but the odds on Ascoli to win were dreadful

and they score in 93rd minute to win

Why tonights game was fixed is because of bookie prices and some bookies had no live market on it at all

Same with napoli match against Inter

There's a few more matches I didnt mention too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,822 ✭✭✭Morf

James Richardson talks about it all the time on Football Weekly.

If it suits both teams for it to be a 1-1 draw you can be sure it will be. It's just the way it's always been done in Italy and will continue to be done.

The bookies know it, the fans know it and the FIGC know it. Nobody even bothers to bet on the matches.

Leaving the game aside (it was clearly always going to be a no contest with Milan not trying) the penalty itself was nothing like a fix.

Unless the fix was the taker told the keeper "I'm going to absolutely blast it low and hard into the bottom right corner, and you're going to dive full length, get half a hand to it just enough to push it onto the post and out".

If it was a 0-0 fix then a convenient Beckham/Baggio style over-the-bar punt would have been the result.

or if they scored, Ac Milan would of scored then

Happens numerous times in the recent fixed matches

    Oh yep, without doubt.
Just clarifying that they aren't fixing a particular score for gambling purposes. (I doubt theres enough liquidity in the betting markets to gain more than a 4 figure sum).

Just looking at the table, did Lazio sneak 4th or is the table I am reading wrong? What was their head-to-head with Udinese?

Not sure what table you are looking at as Ude would be ahead on goal difference as well as head-to-head.
They won the h2h (2-1 win at home, 2-3 defeat away) on away goals.

its a scandal that they can get away with this, I would love if they were all banned. The teams are rubbish anyway and attendances are like rubbish...

Italy only has 3 CL spots this year since the Germen league over took them in the coefficients

No. That will come into affect in 2012–13.

Off topic, but I can't wait to see Napoli and Udinese in the CL. I know a few key players might move on to pastures new, but both clubs have done well recruiting exciting talent lately so I've no doubt those that do move on will be adequately replaced with the CL revenue available to spend.

I think you are misunderstanding it busyliving, it will be reduced to 3 CL spots in Serie A for the 2011/12 season meaning that it will affect the CL the following season.

Yeah was just thinking about it, makes more sense that way because at the start of season each league know how many european places they have

    Any excuse to lambast Italy

    Here ya go
The spectre of corruption returned to haunt Italian football yesterday when former star World Cup striker Beppe Signori was among 16 people arrested after investigators busted a football match-fixing operation that was so big police dubbed it a "proper criminal organisation".

In addition to Signori, who appeared in the 1994 World Cup final, police held other big-name players and club officials in towns across the country including Rome, Turin, Naples and Bologna. Magistrates claimed that players flunked matches for cash, while others were doped to ensure that they played badly.

The probe looks likely to rock Italian football just five years after the so-called Calciopoli scandal that led to Turin giants Juventus being relegated to the second division. In addition to the 16 arrested yesterday, another 12 people are officially under investigation in connection with the suspec-ted match-fixing scam.

Former Lazio and Bologna forward Signori, who retired in 2006, has been placed under house arrest. He is Serie A's eighth top scorer of all time with 188 goals. He was described as the "central element of a group of Bologna betters" involved in the scam, in an arrest warrant issued by Cremona investigating magistrate Guido Salvini.

In comments to the Ansa news agency, Signori said: "Have some mercy. I can't say anything. I will meet my lawyer and then he'll speak for me."

Atalanta's Cristiano Doni and former Sampdoria defender Stefano Bettarini, both of whom played international football for Italy, are also said to be under investigation.

Prosecutors said they had "important and irrefutable" evidence that the 16 were involved in manipulating results in 18 mostly Serie B (second division) and lower league matches in the season that has just come to an end, adding that Atalanta and Siena's promotion to the top flight may be in danger.

Police said the six-month investigation, triggered by a Serie B match in Cremona that aroused suspicion last year, had revealed the involvement of current footballers, club executives and sports betting operators. They said bets worth hundreds of thousands of euros had been placed on matches.

According to Mr Salvini, there was also a failed attempt to fix a Serie A match between Inter Milan and Lecce at the San Siro in March.
