Quickest way to set-up Current Account?

What does one suggest is the quickest way to set up a plain Current Account with simple ATM card. Would it be possible to walk in to a bank and get this set up in a day?

Should be quick if you go prepared with the relevant documentation (photographic ID and recent proof of address). I did have an experience once where I was asked for my contact details so the bank could contact me to set up an appointment to do it, but I just walked out went to another bank and got it done in less than an hour. Obviously the atm card took a while to arrive though.

Provided all your ID is in place and correct you can open the account on the day, but card and pin etc take about a week to arrive.
